Getting around France
France works in every season, but each region has a window where it is at its best. Paris is most pleasant from April to June and from September to October: mild, long evenings, and museums without August lines. Provence peaks from mid-June to mid-July, when the Luberon lavender blooms, and stays warm through September. The French Riviera is a May-to-September destination, with the sea warm enough to swim from June. The Alps have two seasons: skiing from December to April in resorts like Val d'Isère and Chamonix, then hiking, rafting and lake days from mid-June to mid-September. Alsace is special from the last weekend of November to December 24, when Strasbourg, Colmar and the wine villages run their Christmas markets. If you can choose freely, we usually suggest late May, June or September.
Most first visits combine Paris with one or two regions. Families do well in Normandy and the Loire: the D-Day beaches, Mont Saint-Michel, Chenonceau and a day at Disneyland Paris fit in a week, which is exactly the shape of our France family trip. Food and wine travelers head southwest to Bordeaux, Saint-Émilion and the Dordogne, either on our Bordeaux and Dordogne road trip or on a single-base Cognac getaway. Couples who want sea, yachts and Monaco choose the French Riviera week from Saint-Tropez to Nice. Active travelers base themselves in Chamonix for a week under Mont Blanc. In December, our French Christmas itinerary links the Alsace markets, Lyon and skiing in Val d'Isère. For a once-in-a-lifetime trip, the 14-day luxury honeymoon runs from Paris to Burgundy, the Alps and Provence in 5* hotels. We also design fully wheelchair accessible trips to Paris and Nice.
Seven days covers Paris plus one region without rushing: three nights in the capital, then Normandy, the Loire, Provence or the Riviera. Ten days lets you add a second region by TGV, for example Paris, Burgundy or Lyon, and Provence. Two weeks is the right length for Paris, the Alps and the south with a slower pace, and it is the length our honeymoon itinerary uses. See our suggestions for France in 7 days, 10 days and 14 days. Plan one travel day for each change of base, and avoid changing hotels more than every two nights.
The TGV is the backbone of any France itinerary: Paris to Lyon in 2 hours, Paris to Bordeaux in 2 h 05, Paris to Avignon in 2 h 40, Paris to Nice in under 6 hours. We book first class with seat reservations and arrange private transfers at both ends. A rental car makes sense for the Dordogne, the Loire, the Alsace Wine Route and inland Provence, and we structure road trips so you only drive between regions, not inside cities. Our France packages start from 1,099 € per person for a week with private transport, breakfast and guided days, around 1,500 to 2,200 € per person for 4* boutique hotels with private guides and experiences, and from 9,999 € per person for two weeks in 5* hotels with helicopter flights and private chefs. International flights are not included. Barcelona to Nice along the Mediterranean
We had a wonderful time making the journey along the Mediterranean coast. Starting in Barcelona we were able to visit the newly opened Sagrada de Familia with a wonderful guide - one of the highlights our trip. We had an early entry so the crowds were easily managed and we were able to enjoy both inside and out. The next day we had another great guide who showed us the Jewish history and historical presence in Barcelona. After Barcelona, we went to Girona, which was a wonderful surprise. We stayed at a lovely hotel in the old town that was a converted palace. Our tour here of the old town focusing on Jewish history was incredible. The next day we had an all day small group tour of Dali's house and museum - both well worth the travel including the incredible views along the Costa Brava. Travelling by car along the southern coast of France was relatively easily finding great things to see - Pone du Gard, Baux de Provence town and castle, St. Paul de Vence and finally Nice. An electric bike ride in Nice was also wonderful.

All the services that she booked for my family and I worked out smoothly, and the communication was good. Had Sebastian as a tour guide for family friendly guided tour of Louvre was great, highly recommended if bringing young children. Again, didn't stress over tickets or times as Caroline, our travel agent, took care of this for us.

Paris and the Riviera in summer are the costly parts; Normandy, the Loire, Alsace and the Dordogne are noticeably cheaper. A week with 4* boutique hotels, private transfers and guided days runs from about 1,500 € per person excluding flights. Our entry-level family week starts at 1,099 € per person. Lunch menus, train tickets booked early and regional bases keep costs down.
Not for Paris, Lyon, Nice or anywhere linked by TGV. A car helps in the Dordogne, the Loire castles, the Alsace Wine Route and inland Provence. We usually combine both: train between regions, a rental car or a private driver inside the region. Zero driving is possible if you choose cities plus guided day trips.
June and September, for warm weather, open attractions and fewer visitors than July and August. May is lovely but has several public holidays. Lavender in Provence is mid-June to mid-July. Alsace Christmas markets run from late November to December 24. Ski season in the Alps is December to April.

Short trips in spring or fall can be arranged in six to eight weeks, but the best 4* and 5* rooms go first. Your quote arrives within 48 hours.
English is spoken in hotels, restaurants and attractions on every itinerary we design, and your guides and drivers are English-speaking. A simple bonjour goes a long way. Service is included in French restaurant bills by law; rounding up or leaving 5 to 10 percent for excellent service is appreciated but never expected. Guides and drivers welcome a tip of around 5 to 10 € per person per day.
