July is festival month in France. Bastille Day on July 14, the theater festival in Avignon, opera in Aix-en-Provence, jazz in Juan-les-Pins and Nice, and the Tour de France finish in Paris on July 25, 2027. In Provence the lavender is at or just past its peak, and the harvest starts in the middle of the month. It is also the hottest month in the South, with average afternoon highs near 90°F (32°C) inland.

French school holidays start on July 3, 2027, so July is high season on the coast and in the mountains. With the right bookings and the right daily rhythm, it is still a wonderful month.

The summer festival calendar

Avignon

The Festival d'Avignon turns the walled city into a stage for three weeks. The 2026 edition ran from July 4 to 25, and the Avignon Off, with hundreds of independent shows in small theaters, ran on the same dates. The 2027 dates had not been announced when we wrote this; the festival always takes place in July. Avignon hotels fill months ahead, so we often base theatergoers in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon or a mas outside town.

Aix-en-Provence and Orange

The Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, one of Europe's major opera festivals, runs from July 1 to 20, 2027, with open-air performances in the courtyard of the former Archbishop's Palace. The Chorégies d'Orange stage opera in the Roman theater of Orange; their 2027 season was still being prepared.

Jazz on the Riviera

Jazz à Juan, in the pine grove at Juan-les-Pins, ran from July 9 to 19 in 2026; the Nice Jazz Festival filled Place Masséna from July 23 to 25. Both are usually in mid- to late July, with 2027 programs announced in the spring.

The Tour de France

The 2027 Tour starts in Edinburgh on July 2, according to the route presented in October 2026, and finishes on the Champs-Élysées on Sunday, July 25. The Alpine and Pyrenean stages are free to watch from the roadside, but roads close hours before the riders arrive.

Bastille Day in Paris

July 14, 2027 falls on a Wednesday. The day has two moments:

  • The military parade on the Champs-Élysées in the morning, with the air force flypast. Spectators gather along the avenue from early morning.
  • The Concert de Paris and the fireworks at the Eiffel Tower in the evening, with the fireworks around 11 p.m.

Access to the Champ-de-Mars is security-screened and closes when full, and the Eiffel Tower itself closes to visitors that day. We prefer a dinner cruise on the Seine or a terrace with a view of the tower, booked months in advance, over a night in the crowd. Small towns across France hold their own fireworks and "bals" (street dances) on July 13 or 14, often a more relaxed way to celebrate.

Lavender: peak bloom and the harvest

On the Valensole plateau, the bloom usually peaks in the last days of June and the first days of July, and the harvest starts around mid-July. In 2026 the first fields were cut on June 29. Valensole's lavender festival is held on the third Sunday of July (July 19 in 2026). Higher up, around Sault, the fields bloom later and the village celebrates its lavender festival on August 15.

So for lavender in July, come early in the month and head for the higher plateaus later. Our lavender in Provence guide maps the timing.

July weather and how we handle the heat

Météo-France 1991-2020 normals (Chamonix: 1981-2010):

Region (station) High Low Sunshine
Provence (Carpentras) 90°F (32.3°C) 62°F (16.5°C) 363 h
Avignon 89°F (31.5°C) 64°F (18.0°C) n/a
Lyon 83°F (28.2°C) 63°F (17.0°C) 288 h
Riviera (Nice) 82°F (27.5°C) 69°F (20.8°C) 349 h
Bordeaux 81°F (27.1°C) 61°F (16.2°C) 256 h
Alsace (Strasbourg) 80°F (26.4°C) 59°F (14.9°C) 240 h
Paris 78°F (25.7°C) 61°F (16.2°C) 222 h
Loire Valley (Tours) 79°F (25.9°C) 58°F (14.4°C) 247 h
Alps (Chamonix) 75°F (23.9°C) 48°F (9.1°C) n/a
Normandy (Caen) 73°F (22.9°C) 56°F (13.1°C) 219 h

Averages hide heat waves, which now hit France most summers and can push Paris and Provence past 95°F. How we plan July days:

  • Outdoor sights before 11 a.m. and after 5 p.m.; museums, churches and a long lunch in between.
  • Air-conditioned hotels and vehicles everywhere south of Paris, and in Paris too.
  • Provence villages such as Gordes and Roussillon early in the morning, before tour buses and the midday sun.
  • Normandy, Brittany and the Alps as cooler counterweights.

Nice gets less than two rainy days in July on average, and the sea is around 74°F (23°C) by satellite estimates.

Paris in July

Paris stays lively until the end of the month. Paris Plages turned the Seine riverbanks into a beach from July 4 to August 30 in 2026, and since 2025 there are supervised swimming spots in the Seine itself, open from early July (three in 2026: Bras-Marie, Grenelle and Bercy). The summer sales run until July 20, 2027 under the national rule. Many Parisians leave in the last week of July.

Crowds, prices and booking

July is high season almost everywhere except the big cities. Riviera hotels, Provence guesthouses and Chamonix chalets reach their highest rates, and many require minimum stays. Saturdays are the main changeover day: motorways south from Paris and Lyon are at their busiest, so we avoid long drives on Saturdays. Chenonceau runs its longest hours, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., from early July.

Dressing for 90°F days

  • Linen and cotton, a sun hat and high-factor sunscreen.
  • A refillable water bottle; public fountains are everywhere in Paris and Provence.
  • A light sweater for air-conditioned trains and evenings in the Alps.
  • Comfortable walking sandals that you can also wear on cobblestones.
