How much does a trip to Europe cost? Budget calculator

Hotels, trains, experiences, meals: a realistic per-person budget for France, Switzerland, Germany, Italy or Belgium.

How it works

The honest answer to "how much does a trip to Europe cost" is: it depends on four things. Where (Switzerland costs about 30 % more than Germany), when (July and Christmas are 20 % above shoulder season), how well you sleep (a good 4-star in Paris is 220 € a night, a palace is 750 €) and how you move (trains are cheap and fast; a private driver is a luxury that saves time). This calculator uses the rates we actually pay for the hotels, trains and guides we book, so the result is close to what a quote from us looks like, before flights.

Our designers’ advice

Three ways to lower the number without downgrading the trip: travel in May, June, September or October; mix two nights in a landmark hotel with four in a well-chosen 4-star; and let trains do the work between cities, keeping the private driver for the one day it matters (the Loire châteaux, the Bavarian castles). Our how it works page explains what a quote includes, and the trip-length planner helps you decide how many days you really need.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 10-day trip to Europe cost per person?

For a couple in 4-star boutique hotels, traveling by train with a few private guides and good restaurants, count 4,000 to 6,000 € per person before flights in France or Italy, and 5,000 to 7,500 € in Switzerland. A comfortable 4-star trip is about 30 % less; a luxury trip with palaces and a driver is roughly double.

Does the estimate include flights?

No. Transatlantic fares vary too much by city and date. Everything else is included: hotels, trains and transfers, guided experiences and tickets, and meals.

Is Switzerland really that expensive?

Hotels and restaurants cost about a third more than in France or Germany. Trains are excellent value with a Swiss Travel Pass, and mountain excursions are the largest single cost after hotels. Our Swiss itineraries start at 1,999 € per person for 7 days.

Why are your package prices lower than the calculator?

Package prices are "from" prices for two people in shoulder season, with the meals and experiences listed on the package page. The calculator assumes every meal and a daily experience. Ask us for a quote: it is free, takes 48 hours, and shows exactly what is included.
