February splits France in two. On the Riviera it is festival season: the Nice Carnival runs from February 9 to 28, 2027, the Menton Lemon Festival from February 13 to 28, and the mimosa is in flower in the hills above Cannes. In the Alps it is the busiest month of the ski year, because French families take their winter school holidays in three waves between February 6 and March 8, 2027.
Everywhere else, February is still low season. Paris, the Loire and Bordeaux are cold, quiet and good value, and the days are already more than an hour longer than in December.
The Riviera's winter festivals
Nice Carnival, February 9-28, 2027
Nice has held its carnival for well over a century, and it is the one big French event that happens in the middle of winter. The 2027 theme is "Vive l'Amour". The two parades to know:
- The Corso Carnavalesque, with giant papier-mâché floats and a King of Carnival, partly at night under lights.
- The Bataille de Fleurs, a daytime parade where performers on flower-covered floats throw mimosa, gerberas and lilies to the crowd.
Both run around Place Masséna and along the seafront. You can watch some sections standing, but we book seats in the grandstands for our travelers: they are numbered, raised and far less tiring than two hours in a crowd. Tickets go on sale on the carnival's website.
For travelers with reduced mobility, we ask for grandstand places with the easiest access from the entry gates and plan drop-off as close as the security perimeter allows. Our accessible French Riviera trip can be timed to the carnival.
Menton Lemon Festival, February 13-28, 2027
Thirty minutes east of Nice, Menton builds sculptures out of oranges and lemons in the Biovès gardens, with a citrus-motif exhibition and an evening light show in the gardens. The parades of floats decorated with fruit run on Sundays, plus night parades on Thursdays. The organizers ask visitors to arrive in Menton before 11 a.m. on Sundays and before 6 p.m. on Thursdays, and no entry is possible 15 minutes after a parade starts. The train from Nice is the easiest way in on parade days, since roads and parking saturate.
The mimosa route
From January to March, the coastal hills between Bormes-les-Mimosas and Grasse turn yellow with mimosa. Listings give February 20-21, 2027 for the Bormes flower parade; check the town's site before booking, as the official date was not out when we wrote this.
Peak weeks in the Alps: the school holiday calendar
French school holidays are staggered by zone, and every zone heads for the mountains. These are the official 2027 dates from the Ministry of Education:
| Zone |
Main cities |
Winter holidays 2027 |
| C |
Paris, Toulouse, Montpellier |
February 6-22 |
| A |
Lyon, Bordeaux, Grenoble |
February 13 to March 1 |
| B |
Marseille, Nice, Lille, Strasbourg |
February 20 to March 8 |
The overlap weeks, February 13-22 and February 20 to March 1, are the busiest on the slopes, on the roads and on the trains from Paris to the Alps. Saturdays are changeover days: the access roads to the Tarentaise resorts (Val d'Isère, Tignes, Courchevel) can take hours longer than usual.
How we plan around it: we aim for the first days of February, or for midweek arrivals, and book ski hotels and instructors by early fall. In Chamonix, the Aiguille du Midi keeps winter hours (8:10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) and the Brévent-Flégère area runs until April 18. Snow is usually at its most reliable this month: Chamonix's average high is 41°F (5°C) and its average low 21°F (-6.3°C).
Temperatures from Strasbourg to Nice
From Météo-France 1991-2020 normals (Chamonix: 1981-2010):
- Paris: highs of 48°F (8.8°C), lows of 38°F (3.3°C), about 9 rainy days. Sunshine climbs to about 84 hours from 59 in January.
- Loire Valley (Tours) and Lyon: both average 48°F (9°C) by day; Lyon's nights fall to 35°F (1.4°C).
- Alsace (Strasbourg): the coldest of the cities, 45°F (7.3°C) by day and right at freezing at night.
- Alps: in the Tarentaise valley at Bourg-Saint-Maurice, 46°F (7.8°C) by day and 27°F (-2.8°C) at night, colder higher up.
- Provence (Avignon): 54°F (12.4°C) by day, 36°F (2.3°C) at night, often sunny but exposed to the mistral.
- Riviera (Nice): 56°F (13.5°C) by day, 43°F (6.1°C) at night, about 166 hours of sunshine and only 5 rainy days.
- Bordeaux: 54°F (12°C) by day, with about 10 rainy days.
Daylight in Paris reaches about 10 hours by mid-February (sunrise around 8 a.m., sunset around 6:10 p.m.).
Paris and the rest of France in February
Away from the mountains and the Riviera, February is an easy, uncrowded month:
- Paris is calm until the Zone C holidays begin on February 6, and even then families leave rather than arrive. The Salon International de l'Agriculture, the giant farm show at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles, runs from February 27 to March 7, 2027; it is a fun half-day for food lovers and fills nearby hotels.
- Lunar New Year falls on February 6, 2027. Paris celebrates with parades in the 13th arrondissement and Belleville, usually on the weekends after; dates are announced by the city halls in January.
- Mont-Saint-Michel has one of the biggest tides of the winter around February 21-23, 2027, with a coefficient of about 110 according to the tourist office's tide table. Arrive two hours before high tide to watch the bay fill.
- Lake Annecy still has only one cruise running, the 75-minute "Cœur de Lac", until February 28.
- Valentine's Day falls on a Sunday in 2027. Paris restaurants book up for both the Saturday and Sunday nights.
Two price levels: ski weeks and carnival weekends
February has two price levels. Ski resorts charge peak rates for the holiday weeks, and Nice hotels rise for carnival weekends, particularly when a parade falls on a Saturday. Paris, Lyon, the Loire, Provence and Bordeaux stay at winter rates all month.
Packing for slopes, parades and gray Paris days
- For the Alps: base layers, a warm hat and goggles; rent skis and boots in the resort.
- For Paris and the north: a warm waterproof coat, a scarf and shoes that handle rain.
- For the Riviera: a light down jacket for evenings, sunglasses and comfortable shoes for standing at parades. Many grandstands at the Nice parades are uncovered, so bring a compact umbrella.
Three ways to spend February in France
The Riviera festival week. Five nights in Nice, timed for one Corso and one Bataille de Fleurs, with a day in Menton for the Lemon Festival and a morning in Monaco. Our French Riviera in 7 days becomes a winter version built on Nice, Monaco and Menton, since Saint-Tropez and Porquerolles are asleep.
Ski first, then Lyon. Arrive in Val d'Isère on February 1 or 2, before the holiday weeks, then finish with two nights in Lyon. It is the second half of our French Christmas trip, moved to a quieter week.
Paris and the Riviera by train. Four nights in Paris, the TGV south, and four nights in Nice for the carnival. Our guide to Paris to Nice by train covers the journey.
For the rest of the year, our best time to visit France guide compares the seasons, and France in March picks up where the festivals end.
