If we had to pick one month for a first trip to France, it would be May. The days are long (about 15 hours of daylight in Paris by mid-month), afternoons are in the high 60s and low 70s °F across most of the country, everything seasonal is open, and the summer crowds have not arrived. May 2027 also brings the 80th Cannes Film Festival (May 11-22) and the start of Roland-Garros (from May 17).

The one thing to plan around is the French calendar. May is full of public holidays, and the French turn them into long weekends.

The May holidays and bridge days in 2027

French public holidays in May, and what they mean for your trip:

Date Holiday What happens
Saturday, May 1 Labor Day Louvre, Versailles and Mont-Saint-Michel abbey closed; most shops shut
Thursday, May 6 Ascension Schools also off Friday, May 7: a four-day weekend
Saturday, May 8 Victory in Europe Day Ceremonies; most sights open
Monday, May 17 Whit Monday Holiday for most, though some businesses open

In 2027 the first two holidays fall on Saturdays, so the usual "pont" (a day off bridging a holiday to the weekend) only happens at Ascension. From Thursday, May 6 to Sunday, May 9, French families travel, motorways and trains are full and Mont-Saint-Michel, the Loire châteaux and the coast are busy. Outside those dates, May is calm.

Plan around May 1 in particular. It is the one day of the year when almost everything in France closes, including the Louvre and Versailles. Lily-of-the-valley sellers appear on every corner that morning; it is a nice moment for a walk, not for sightseeing.

Cannes, Roland-Garros and the Riviera's busiest fortnight

The Cannes Film Festival, May 11-22, 2027. The festival itself is for accredited professionals, but the town is in full swing, and the free "Cinéma de la Plage" screenings on the beach are open to the public. Hotels in Cannes book up far in advance and prices rise along the whole coast from Antibes to Nice. If Cannes is not your reason for coming, we base you in Nice or Antibes and visit Cannes on another week. Our guide to where to stay on the French Riviera explains the trade-offs.

Roland-Garros, May 17 to June 6, 2027. Qualifying starts on May 17 and the main draw on May 23. Tickets go on sale through the official website. We book hotels on the west side of Paris early for those weeks.

The Monaco Grand Prix follows on June 4-6, 2027, so late May and early June are the most expensive weeks of spring on the Riviera.

Other May events

  • ExpoRose in Grasse, the rose show in the perfume capital, usually takes place over a long weekend in early or mid-May (May 8-10 in 2026). The May rose (rose centifolia) harvest for perfumers happens the same month.
  • The European Night of Museums opens museums across France free in the evening, on a Saturday in mid- or late May (May 23 in 2026).
  • The Gypsy pilgrimage in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, May 24-25 every year, with processions to the sea in the Camargue.
  • The D-Day Festival in Normandy starts on May 29, 2027, and runs until June 13.
  • Les Nuits de Fourvière, the summer festival in Lyon's Roman theaters, usually opens in late May or early June.

Temperatures from Normandy to Provence

Météo-France 1991-2020 normals (Chamonix: 1981-2010). Rain in May often comes as short afternoon storms rather than gray days.

Region (station) High Low Rainy days
Paris 68°F (20.2°C) 52°F (11.1°C) 9
Normandy (Caen) 63°F (17.4°C) 47°F (8.5°C) 10
Loire Valley (Tours) 67°F (19.6°C) 49°F (9.4°C) 9
Alsace (Strasbourg) 70°F (20.9°C) 50°F (10.1°C) 11
Burgundy (Dijon) 68°F (20.0°C) 49°F (9.2°C) 10
Lyon 71°F (21.5°C) 52°F (11.2°C) 10
Alps (Chamonix) 64°F (17.6°C) 41°F (4.8°C) 14
Provence (Carpentras) 76°F (24.6°C) 51°F (10.8°C) 6
Riviera (Nice) 70°F (21.0°C) 58°F (14.5°C) 5
Bordeaux 71°F (21.7°C) 53°F (11.4°C) 10
Dordogne (Bergerac) 72°F (22.0°C) 49°F (9.6°C) 10

The sea at Nice warms to around 64°F (18°C) by the end of May. Beach clubs on the Riviera are open, and the first swimmers are out, but most visitors find the water bracing until June.

What is in season in May

May is a food month as much as a weather month. White asparagus from the Loire and the Landes, the first strawberries from Plougastel and Carpentras, and rosé from Provence in its first weeks of release. Burgundy and Bordeaux cellars are calm before the summer and happy to spend time with visitors. In the Alps, May is the quietest month of the year: ski lifts have closed, most summer lifts have not opened yet, and Chamonix sees about 14 rainy days. We usually skip the mountains in May.

When May gets expensive

Expect shoulder-season prices in most of France, with three exceptions: the Cannes festival fortnight on the Riviera, the Ascension weekend everywhere, and Paris during Roland-Garros. Book Paris restaurants for Saturday nights two to three weeks ahead.

Packing for warm days and cool evenings

  • Light layers and one warmer sweater: evenings drop into the 50s °F in most regions.
  • A light rain jacket for the north and the occasional storm.
  • Swimwear for the Riviera, even if you only use it at the hotel pool.
  • Smart-casual clothes if you plan dinners in Cannes or Monaco during the festival weeks.

Riviera, Southwest or a two-week honeymoon

The Riviera before the summer. Nice, Antibes, Saint-Tropez and the island of Porquerolles, with the beach clubs open and the roads still clear. Our French Riviera in 7 days is at its best in May; we set it before or after the Cannes festival.

Bordeaux and the Dordogne. Saint-Émilion tastings, the Lascaux caves and the Dordogne villages before the July crowds, on our Bordeaux and Dordogne road trip.

Paris, Burgundy and Provence. Two weeks for a honeymoon or a big anniversary, with long evenings in each region, following our luxury France honeymoon.

Frequently asked questions

Is May the best month to visit France?

For many travelers, yes. Paris averages 68°F (20°C), the South is in the mid-70s °F, days are long and the summer crowds have not arrived. The points to plan around are the public holidays, especially May 1, when most sights close, and the Ascension long weekend, from May 6 to 9 in 2027.

What is closed in France on May 1?

May 1, Labor Day, is the one public holiday when nearly everything closes, including the Louvre, the palace of Versailles and the abbey at Mont-Saint-Michel. Most shops and many restaurants are shut too. Public transport runs on a reduced schedule. We keep May 1 for a long walk, a park or a pre-booked lunch.

When is the Cannes Film Festival in 2027?

The 80th Cannes Film Festival runs from May 11 to 22, 2027. Screenings in the Palais are for accredited guests, but the town is lively and the free outdoor "Cinéma de la Plage" screenings are open to all. Hotel prices rise along the whole Riviera during those two weeks, so book early or come another week.

Can you swim in the South of France in May?

You can, but it is cool. The sea at Nice is around 64°F (18°C) by late May, according to satellite estimates. Hotel pools are open and beach clubs are running, so May works for beach days in the sun with short swims. The water becomes comfortable for most people in June.
