Rafting

Annecy is a small Alpine town in Haute-Savoie, about 40 km (25 miles) south of Geneva, built around canals at the northern tip of Lake Annecy. Give it two nights, or three if you add a day in Chamonix, and come in May, June or September, when the boats run and the lanes are calm. Our office in Villefranche-sur-Saône is about two hours away by road, and Annecy is where we send travelers who want the French Alps without staying in a ski resort.

The Vieille Ville: canals, the Palais de l'Isle and the market

The old town sits where the lake drains into the Thiou, a short river that runs through the center in canals lined with arcaded houses. Its emblem is the Palais de l'Isle, a fortified house on an island in the canal whose oldest parts date from the late 12th century. Over the centuries it served as a residence, a mint, a courthouse and a prison, until a new prison opened in 1864. It now holds the town's architecture and heritage center, and you can walk through the old courtroom, the cells and the chapel.

Above the rooftops, the medieval castle houses the Musée-Château d'Annecy, with collections on the region and the lake and a terrace over the old town. Down by the water, the Pont des Amours links the Jardins de l'Europe to the Pâquier, the long lawn where the town comes to watch the sunset over the lake.

The market fills rue Sainte-Claire and the lanes along the canals on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday mornings. This is where we send travelers for Savoie cheeses: Reblochon, Beaufort and Tomme de Savoie, with dried sausages and mountain honey. Go before 10:30, when the lanes fill up. On the plate, look for fondue savoyarde, tartiflette and fish from the lake such as féra and omble chevalier (Arctic char).

Our pacing advice is simple: walk the old town early in the morning or after 6 p.m. In July and August, day visitors crowd the canals from late morning, and those hours are better spent on the water.

Lake Annecy by boat, bike and swimming

Lake Annecy covers about 27.6 km² (10.7 square miles). After the Lac du Bourget, it is the largest natural lake lying entirely in France, ringed by the Semnoz, the Tournette and the Bauges mountains.

  • By boat. The Compagnie des Bateaux du Lac d'Annecy runs commented cruises of one hour or an hour and a half from the quay in the center, and in high season a service that stops at ports around the lake as far as Doussard. For couples and families, we prefer a private boat with a skipper for a morning, or a small electric boat that you drive yourself without a license.
  • By bike. A greenway, part of the Belle Via route, follows an old railway line along the west shore toward the southern end of the lake and on to Albertville, about 44 km in all. It is flat and mostly car-free, and e-bikes are easy to rent in town. We often arrange for a driver to collect riders and bikes at the south end, so the ride is one way.
  • Swimming. Annecy has public beaches at the Marquisats and at Albigny, and the lakeside villages have their own. Most swimmers find the water comfortable from late June to early September.

Around the lake: Talloires, Menthon and the Col de la Forclaz

  • Talloires, on the east shore, sits on a small bay facing the evening light. It is the lake's most romantic village, and the one we choose for honeymoons and anniversaries.
  • Menthon-Saint-Bernard has a castle on a rock above the lake, where tradition places the birth of Saint Bernard of Menthon. In 2026 it opened from April 1 to November 12, on weekend afternoons in spring and autumn and every day in July and August; check the schedule for your dates.
  • Duingt, on the west shore, is where the lake narrows between two promontories, with a castle on a spit of land (private, seen from the shore or the water).
  • The Col de la Forclaz, above Talloires, is the launch site for tandem paragliding flights over the lake, and a viewpoint even if you keep both feet on the ground.
  • The Semnoz, the mountain directly above town, has a road to the summit with views toward Mont Blanc on clear days.

Where to stay in Annecy

Area Why stay there Who it suits
Old town and canals Walk to the market, restaurants and boats Short stays, travelers without a car
Albigny and the lakefront east of the center Lake views, quieter evenings, 15 to 20 minutes on foot to the old town Couples, summer stays
Veyrier-du-Lac and Menthon Lakeside villages between town and Talloires Travelers who want calm with a short drive into town
Talloires The water's edge, evening light, the best restaurants on the lake Honeymoons, anniversaries, travelers with a driver

Two well-known addresses show the range at the top of the market: the Impérial Palace on the lakefront at Albigny, and the Auberge du Père Bise in Talloires, a Relais & Châteaux hotel whose restaurant, Jean Sulpice, held two Michelin stars in 2026. In any lakeside hotel, the lake-facing room is the upgrade that changes the stay, and it is the first thing we ask for.

Parking in the old town is difficult, so travelers driving themselves should choose a hotel with parking. Annecy station is about 10 minutes on foot from the canals.

Day trips from Annecy

Destination Time from Annecy Why go Our notes
Chamonix and the Aiguille du Midi about 1 h 30 by car Mont Blanc up close By train, about 2 h 30 with two changes, so we book a driver
Geneva about 45 min by car, about 1 h 30 by Léman Express Old town, lakefront, flights Easy to combine with a departure from Geneva Airport
Gorges du Fier about 10 km (6 miles) west A 252 m walkway along the cliff, 25 m above the river Open mid-March to mid-October; not suitable for strollers
Lyon about 1 h 50 to 2 h by direct TER Bouchons, Vieux Lyon Better as an overnight stop than a day trip

Chamonix is the day trip most of our travelers want. If you continue there rather than return to Annecy, our guide from Geneva to Chamonix covers the trains and transfers. Our Chamonix Adventure Week, from €1,299 (about $1,500) per person, does it the other way around: six nights in Chamonix with a day in Annecy and a cruise on the lake.

How to combine Annecy with Lyon and Switzerland

Annecy sits between Lyon and Geneva, which makes it a natural link between France and Switzerland. Three routes we build often:

  1. Paris, Annecy and Switzerland. A few direct TGVs a day reach Annecy from Paris Gare de Lyon in about 3 h 45. After two nights, the Léman Express runs to Geneva in about 1 h 30, and Swiss trains continue to Lausanne, the Lavaux vineyards and Zermatt. This is Route A of our 10-day France and Switzerland itinerary.
  2. Lyon and Annecy. Two nights in Lyon for the food (our answer to is Lyon worth visiting explains why), then the direct TER to Annecy in under two hours, or about 1 h 45 by car.
  3. Paris, Burgundy and the Alps. Our luxury France honeymoon, 14 days from €9,999 (about $11,500) per person, spends a day in Annecy and a day in Chamonix between Burgundy and the Lavaux vineyards.

The Léman Express is a regional train with no luggage service, so you carry your bags on and off. With large suitcases, many of our travelers prefer a private transfer for the short cross-border leg to Geneva or Lausanne.

When to go to Annecy

  • May and June: the mountains are green, the boats run and the town is still calm. The Annecy International Animation Film Festival fills hotels in mid-June (June 13 to 19, 2027), so book early for those dates.
  • July and August: the warmest water and the longest evenings, and the busiest weeks. The Fête du Lac, on the first Saturday of August, is a fireworks show over the bay of Albigny watched from paid stands; roads close and hotels sell out.
  • September and October: our favorite season, with clear light and fewer visitors. On the second Saturday of October, the Retour des Alpages brings herds, farmers and Savoie crafts through the old town.
  • November to March: quiet, cold and often gray, with a reduced boat schedule. The ski resorts of the Aravis, such as La Clusaz and Le Grand-Bornand, are within an hour by road.

Our best time to visit tool compares Annecy's season with the rest of your route.

Annecy with reduced mobility

The lakeside is the easy part of Annecy: the Pâquier, the Jardins de l'Europe and the promenade toward Albigny are flat and wide. The old town is cobbled, and some canal bridges have steps, so we plan a step-free loop and use a car to reach the castle museum, which is uphill. The Gorges du Fier walkway is not suitable for wheelchairs. We confirm boat boarding with the operator in advance, and we choose lakeside hotels where we have checked level access to the room.

Annecy fits into many of our France trips; tell a travel designer how many nights you have and we will build your Annecy stay around the lake, Lyon or Switzerland.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Annecy?

Two nights give you a morning in the old town and the market, an afternoon on the lake and a slow dinner by the canals. Three nights let you add a full day in Chamonix or an excursion around the lake to Talloires and Menthon. One night works only as a stop between Lyon and Geneva, and then we focus on the old town and an evening walk on the lakefront.

Can you visit Annecy as a day trip from Geneva?

Yes. Annecy is about 45 minutes from Geneva by car, and the Léman Express regional train takes about an hour and a half. A day covers the old town, the Palais de l'Isle and a one-hour boat cruise. You miss the evening, though, when the canals empty out, which is why we usually suggest at least one night.

Is Annecy worth visiting in winter?

Yes, if you like quiet towns more than swimming and boat days. Winter brings cold, often gray weather and a reduced boat schedule, but the old town is calm, fondue season is at its best, and the Aravis ski resorts are less than an hour away.

Should I stay in Annecy or Chamonix?

It depends on what you want to do. Annecy is a lake town with an old center, restaurants and gentle outings; Chamonix is a mountain town at the foot of Mont Blanc, for cable cars, hiking and skiing. They are about 1 hour 30 apart by car. On a trip of a week or more, we often book two or three nights in each.
