France in 7 days: three ways to do it

Our designers’ take

Seven days is the most common length Americans give France, and it is enough if you resist the urge to see everything. The rule we apply: Paris plus one region, or one region done properly without Paris. You lose half a day every time you change hotels, so two bases, three at most.

  1. 1

Paris and Normandy or the Loire (families)

3 nights in Bayeux for Honfleur, the D-Day beaches and Mont Saint-Michel, 2 nights in Amboise for Chenonceau and Azay-le-Rideau, 1 night in Paris with Versailles and a Disneyland day. This is our France family trip, from 1,099 € per person with a private driver throughout.

  2. 2

    The French Riviera

3 nights in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, 3 nights in Nice, with a yacht day to Porquerolles, Eze, Monaco by night and a perfume workshop in Grasse. See French Riviera in 7 days. For wheelchair users, the accessible Riviera trip covers the same coast from one hotel.

  3. 3

Bordeaux and the Dordogne by car

3 nights in Bordeaux (Saint-Émilion, Arcachon oysters, a balloon flight), 3 nights in Sarlat (Rocamadour, Padirac, Lascaux IV). Our Bordeaux and Dordogne road trip starts at 1,499 € per person. Other one-region weeks: Chamonix for mountains, Cognac for spirits, accessible Paris, and in December the Alsace, Lyon and Val d'Isère itinerary.

Choose 10 days if you want Paris and two regions, or Paris and Provence with time to breathe. Stay with 7 if your flights are fixed or if this is a first taste before a longer return. Either way, a designer based in France sends you a priced proposal within 48 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Is 7 days enough for Paris and the French Riviera?

Yes, with the TGV: 3 nights in Paris, then 5 h 30 by train to Nice (or a 1 h 20 flight) for 3 nights. You get Versailles, the Louvre and one day trip in Paris, then Eze, Monaco and Nice. Skip Saint-Tropez on that timeline; it needs its own two nights.

How many nights should I spend in Paris in a 7-day trip?

Three nights is the sweet spot: two full days for the city and one for Versailles or Giverny. Four nights if Paris is your main goal. Two nights only works if you have been before. Arrive in Paris, leave from a regional airport such as Nice, Bordeaux or Marseille to avoid backtracking.

Should I rent a car for a week in France?

Only if your week is in the Dordogne, the Loire, Alsace or inland Provence. For Paris, the Riviera and Lyon, trains and private transfers are faster. On our family trip a private driver handles Normandy and the Loire, so nobody drives at all; on the Bordeaux trip you drive, but only between regions.

What does a 7-day France trip cost?

From 1,099 € per person for our family itinerary with private transport and breakfast, 1,499 € for the Bordeaux road trip, 1,899 € for the Riviera with yacht day and private transfers, up to 2,099 € for the Christmas itinerary with a 5* night in Lyon. International flights are extra. Your quote lists every inclusion.
