France in 14 days: three ways to do it

Our designers’ take

Two weeks is the length France deserves. You get Paris without rushing, two or three regions with three to four nights each, and one or two free days for a market, a long lunch or doing nothing. The route below is the one our 14-day honeymoon follows, and it works just as well for couples celebrating an anniversary or for parents traveling with adult children.

  1. 1

Paris, Burgundy, the Alps and Provence

4 nights in Paris (private Seine cruise, Versailles, a day at Dior and Place Vendôme), TGV to Beaune for 2 nights on the Route des Grands Crus, private transfer to Annecy for 1 night on the lake, 1 night in Chamonix with a helicopter over Mont Blanc and a day in Lavaux across the Swiss border, then 5 nights in Aix-en-Provence for the Luberon, the Camargue, Marseille and a cooking class. See the full day-by-day in Luxury France Honeymoon in 14 Days, from 9,999 € per person in 5* hotels. We also build the same route with 4* boutique hotels at roughly half the price.

  2. 2

Paris, Normandy, the Loire and Bordeaux

4 nights in Paris, 3 nights in Bayeux, 3 nights in Amboise, TGV from Tours to Bordeaux (about 2 hours) for 3 nights with Saint-Émilion and Arcachon, home from Bordeaux. Our family trip and Bordeaux road trip supply the regional days.

  3. 3

    Winter

3 nights in Paris, TGV to Strasbourg for 3 nights of Alsace Christmas markets, Lyon for 2, then 5 nights skiing in Val d'Isère, an extension of our French Christmas itinerary.

If 14 days feels long for one country, our 14-day Europe routes add Switzerland or Italy. For shorter trips, see France in 10 days.

Frequently asked questions

Is two weeks too long for France?

Not at all. France has six or seven regions that each justify a week. Two weeks lets you see three of them at a pace where you unpack, learn the café on the corner and take a day off. Clients who come for two weeks almost always come back for the regions they skipped.

How should I split 14 days between Paris and the regions?

Four nights in Paris, then ten nights across two or three regions, with no stop shorter than two nights. If Paris is familiar, three nights there and a fourth region. Put the Alps in the middle of the trip so the mountain days break up the cities and the wine country.

What does two weeks in France cost?

Our 5* honeymoon itinerary starts at 9,999 € per person with helicopter, private chefs and palace hotels. The same route in 4* boutique hotels with the same transfers and guides comes in around 4,500 to 6,000 € per person. A family route through Normandy, the Loire and Bordeaux is closer to 3,500 €. Flights excluded.

When is the best time for a two-week France trip?

Late May to June, or September to early October, when Paris, the Alps and the south are all pleasant. Mid-June to mid-July if you want lavender in the Luberon. Avoid August in Paris. For the winter route, the first three weeks of December combine Alsace markets and early-season skiing.
