Loire castles, France Family Trip in 7 Days: Normandy, Loire Castles & Disneyland

April is when France's gardens and châteaux come back to life. Monet's garden at Giverny usually reopens on April 1, the Versailles fountains start playing again, the Loire châteaux move to their longer spring hours, and the International Garden Festival at Chaumont-sur-Loire opens in late April. The weather is mild but unsettled: Paris averages 62°F (16.6°C) in the afternoon, with showers that come and go.

The catch is the school calendar. French spring holidays run in three waves from April 3 to May 3, 2027, so the most famous sights get busy on certain weeks. Here is how we plan around them.

The gardens that open in April

April is the month we build trips around flowers and fountains rather than beaches.

  • Giverny. Monet's house and garden open for the season, usually April 1 to November 1. In April the tulips and fruit trees are out and the water lilies have not yet flowered. We book timed tickets for the first slot of the morning and drive out from Paris (about 75 km) instead of using the train-and-shuttle route.
  • Versailles. The Grandes Eaux Musicales, when the fountains run to Baroque music, started on April 3 in 2026 and ran until November 1. The 2027 dates were not published when we wrote this. The palace is closed on Mondays.
  • Chaumont-sur-Loire. The International Garden Festival ran from April 22 to November 1 in 2026. The 2027 theme is "Jardins d'amour"; exact dates are still to be announced.
  • Villandry. The château's famous kitchen garden is planted with spring vegetables and flowers in April; the château itself has been open since February.
  • Chenonceau moves from winter hours to a 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. schedule at the start of April (from April 4 in 2026), and Chambord has been on its longer hours since late March.

Garden visits mean gravel paths, slopes and some narrow walkways. For travelers using a wheelchair or with limited stamina, we check each site's step-free route before it goes into the itinerary, and our accessible Paris trip includes Versailles with adapted transport.

Spring school holidays: three waves

The official 2027 dates from the Ministry of Education:

Zone Main cities Spring holidays 2027
C Paris, Toulouse, Montpellier April 3-19
A Lyon, Bordeaux, Grenoble April 10-26
B Marseille, Nice, Lille, Strasbourg, Normandy April 17 to May 3

The overlap means families are on the road for the whole month, with the busiest stretch from April 10 to 26. Disneyland Paris, Mont-Saint-Michel, the Loire châteaux and the Paris museums feel it most. We plan the busiest sights for weekday mornings and book everything that takes timed tickets.

One piece of good news: Easter falls on March 28 in 2027, so April has no public holidays this year, and shops, markets and restaurants keep normal hours all month.

The Paris Marathon is usually held on a Sunday in April (April 12 in 2026). The route closes roads across central Paris that morning, so check the 2027 date on the race website before booking a Sunday arrival.

Showers and sunshine: April temperatures

Météo-France 1991-2020 normals (Chamonix: 1981-2010):

Paris and the north. Paris averages 62°F (16.6°C) by day and 46°F (7.9°C) at night, with about 9 rainy days and 177 hours of sunshine. Normandy is cooler, around 58°F (14.4°C) in Caen, with a sharp wind on the D-Day beaches.

The Loire, Alsace, Burgundy and Lyon. Tours reaches 61°F (16°C), Strasbourg 63°F (17°C) and Lyon 63°F (17.4°C). Nights stay cool, between 41 and 45°F, so a terrace dinner needs a jacket.

Provence and the Riviera. Carpentras, at the foot of Mont Ventoux, averages 69°F (20.4°C) by day but only 44°F (6.9°C) at night. Nice is steadier at 63°F (17.4°C) by day and 51°F (10.8°C) at night. April is also one of the wetter months on the Riviera, with about 6 rainy days.

Bordeaux and the Dordogne. Around 64°F (18°C) by day in Bordeaux, with 11 rainy days. The vines are budding and the châteaux open for tastings without the summer queues.

The Alps. Chamonix averages 55°F (12.7°C) by day and just above freezing at night. Snow lingers above the tree line.

By mid-April the sun sets around 8:40 p.m. in Paris, which gives you long evenings for walks along the Seine.

The mountains between seasons

April is an in-between month in the Alps. Courchevel and Chamonix's Brévent-Flégère area close on April 18, 2027, while Val d'Isère and Tignes keep skiing until May 2. The Aiguille du Midi cable car runs until 5 p.m. and gives the best view of Mont Blanc in clear spring weather. Hiking trails above about 5,000 feet are usually still under snow, and the high road passes such as the Iseran and the Galibier stay closed until late May or June. We use April in the Alps for spring skiing, lake towns such as Annecy, or not at all.

Shoulder-season rates and timed tickets

April is shoulder season. Hotel rates in Paris rise from their winter level, particularly on weekends and during the Zone C holiday weeks. Provence and the Riviera are still below their summer prices, and the Loire and Bordeaux are good value. Book Giverny, Versailles and Disneyland tickets as soon as your dates are firm.

Layers for a four-season day

  • A light waterproof jacket and a warm layer: you will wear both on the same day.
  • Comfortable walking shoes for gravel garden paths and wet cobblestones.
  • A compact umbrella for Paris and Normandy.
  • Sunglasses for the South, where the April light is already strong.

Frequently asked questions

Is April a good month to visit France?

Yes, especially for Paris, gardens and châteaux. Giverny reopens, the Versailles fountains run again and the Loire châteaux switch to long hours. Weather is mild but changeable, with afternoon highs in the low 60s °F in Paris. The main drawback is French school holidays, which run from April 3 to May 3, 2027.

When does Giverny open in 2027?

Monet's house and garden at Giverny usually open for the season on April 1 and close on November 1. The 2027 dates had not been published by the Claude Monet Foundation when we wrote this, so check before booking. In April you will see tulips and fruit blossom; the water lilies flower from late spring into summer.

Is it warm in the South of France in April?

Pleasantly mild. Nice averages 63°F (17.4°C) by day and Provence close to 70°F inland, but nights are cool, especially in the Luberon and around Mont Ventoux, where they drop to the mid-40s °F. The sea is still too cold for most swimmers, and April brings a few rainy days.

Are French school holidays in April busy?

They make some places busy. In 2027 the three zones are off from April 3 to May 3, with the heaviest overlap from April 10 to 26. Disneyland Paris, Mont-Saint-Michel, the Loire châteaux and the Paris museums see the most families. Weekday mornings and pre-booked timed tickets make a big difference.
