Europe in 14 days: three ways to do it

Our designers’ take

Two weeks is the minimum for two countries done well, or three by train. Each route below has four to six bases with at least two nights each, one border crossing per week, and trains for every long hop. One designer in France handles both sides of the border and prices it in 48 hours.

  1. 1

    Switzerland to Italy (published)

2 nights in Zurich, 3 nights in Interlaken (kayak on Lake Brienz, the Schilthorn, a via ferrata, paragliding), 2 nights in Lucerne (Mount Rigi, a lake boat), 2 nights in Lugano, 2 nights on Lake Como, 1 night on Lake Maggiore, 2 nights in Milan. See Switzerland to Italy by Train in 14 Days, from 5,499 € per person.

  2. 2

Paris, the Alps and Provence with a Swiss day (published)

4 nights in Paris, 2 in Beaune, 1 in Annecy, 1 in Chamonix with a day in Lavaux and Chillon on the Swiss side of Lake Geneva, 5 in Aix-en-Provence. That is our 14-day luxury honeymoon in 5* hotels; we also price it in 4* boutique hotels and with two full Swiss nights in Montreux instead of the day trip.

  3. 3

    Belgium, Alsace and Switzerland extended

our 10-day three-country itinerary (Brussels, Ghent, Bruges, Strasbourg, Colmar, Basel, Zermatt, Pilatus, Bern) plus 2 nights in Lucerne and 2 in Paris at the front, since Brussels is 1 h 25 from Paris by train.

  4. 4

    France and Switzerland from scratch

3 nights in Paris, TGV Lyria to Geneva (3 h 10), 2 nights in Montreux, 3 nights in Zermatt, 2 nights in Lucerne, 3 nights in Annecy, out of Geneva.

For three countries at a calmer pace, see Europe in 21 days. If one country is enough, start with France in 14 days or Switzerland in 14 days.

Frequently asked questions

Which two countries work best for a two-week Europe trip?

France and Switzerland, or Switzerland and Italy, because the borders are short train rides (Paris to Geneva 3 h 10, Zurich to Milan 3 h 20) and the contrast is real: cities and wine on one side, mountains on the other, lakes at the end. Belgium pairs well with France and Switzerland for a three-country rail route.

How many places should I stay in during 14 days?

Five to seven bases, none shorter than two nights except a Glacier Express stop. Every move costs about half a day, so eight or more stops turns the trip into a tour of train stations. We also forward luggage between Swiss hotels so you travel with a daypack on the scenic lines.

Should I fly into one city and out of another?

Yes. Open-jaw tickets (into Zurich, out of Milan; into Paris, out of Marseille or Geneva) usually cost the same as a round trip and save a full day of backtracking. All our two-week routes are built this way, and we tell you which airports to search before you book flights.

What does two weeks in Europe cost with a DMC?

Our published 14-day Switzerland to Italy trip is 5,499 € per person with 3* hotels, trains, private boats and adventure activities; a 4* version is about 6,500 €. The 5* France route is 9,999 €. A custom France and Switzerland fortnight in 4* boutique hotels typically comes to 5,000 to 7,000 € per person, flights excluded.
