Europe in 21 days: three ways to do it

Our designers’ take

Three weeks is when Europe stops feeling like a checklist. You can give three countries a week each, keep three-night stays everywhere, and build in rest days where the view is good enough that you do not want to move. Every three-week trip is assembled from our itineraries by one designer based in France, priced within 48 hours.

  1. 1

Paris to Milan through the Alps

4 nights in Paris, TGV to Beaune for 2 nights in Burgundy, train to Lyon for 2 nights (traboules, Beaujolais, a Bocuse dinner), TGV to Geneva and on to Montreux for 2 nights on Lake Geneva, 3 nights in Zermatt or Grindelwald, 2 nights in Lucerne, 2 nights in Lugano, 2 nights on Lake Como, 2 nights in Milan. It joins the France days of our 14-day honeymoon, the mountain days of Legendary Swiss Trains and the Italian days of Switzerland to Italy in 14 Days.

  2. 2

Belgium, France, Switzerland and Italy by train

3 nights in Brussels with Ghent and Bruges day trips, 3 nights in Strasbourg for Colmar and the Wine Route, 2 nights in Basel, 3 nights in the Bernese Oberland, 3 nights in Zermatt with the Glacier Express to St. Moritz for 1 night, the Bernina Express to Lugano for 2 nights, 3 nights on Lake Como and Milan. The first half is our 10-day three-country itinerary.

  3. 3

    December

Paris, the Strasbourg and Colmar markets, 4 nights of early skiing in Zermatt, then Germany's Christmas markets by train from Munich to Berlin.

Three weeks is right if you fly rarely and want to come home having really been somewhere. If it is too long, 14 days covers two countries at the same pace. Season advice and train times are in the multi-country Europe guide.

Frequently asked questions

How many countries can I visit in 3 weeks without rushing?

Three, with a week in each, or two with ten days each. Four is possible only if two of them are small and adjacent, like Belgium and Alsace. Our rule is one border per week and no more than nine bases in 21 days, which keeps every stop at two or three nights.

What is the best 3-week route for a first trip to Europe?

Paris, Burgundy and Lyon, then the Swiss Alps (Lake Geneva, Zermatt, Lucerne), then Lugano, Lake Como and Milan. It moves from city to wine country to mountains to lakes, uses trains for every hop and ends somewhere warm. Fly into Paris and out of Milan.

How do I handle luggage and trains over three weeks?

Pack for a week and use hotel laundry in Lyon, Lucerne and Milan. We book first class with seat reservations on every intercity train, private transfers from each station, and luggage forwarding in Switzerland so you ride the panoramic trains with a daypack. Your designer sends one document with every ticket and pickup time.

What does a 3-week Europe trip cost?

With 4* boutique hotels, first-class trains, private transfers and three or four guided days per week, expect 7,500 to 10,000 € per person, flights excluded; Switzerland is the expensive third, Italy and Belgium the cheaper ones. A 5* version with private chefs and helicopter time can double that. Your proposal shows every inclusion.
