April is Switzerland's changeover month, and it rewards travelers who plan lift by lift. The lake towns turn green and the orchards bloom, while up in the mountains the ski areas close one after another and many cableways stop for their spring revision. In return you get some of the lowest rates of the year, calm museums, and three good events: Cully Jazz in the Lavaux vineyards, Zermatt Unplugged, and Zurich's Sechseläuten on April 19, 2027.
We build plenty of April trips. The trick is to know exactly which lifts are closed on which days, so here is the 2027 calendar as the operators have published it. For a broader view of the seasons, read our best time to visit Switzerland.

Ski areas close in stages too: Grindelwald-Männlichen and St. Moritz Corviglia on April 4, Wengen and Kleine Scheidegg on April 25, Mürren-Schilthorn, Zermatt and Diavolezza on May 2. Some mountain hotels shut between the end of the ski season and early summer, with dates that vary by house, so we check each one before we suggest it.
The practical reading: the Jungfraujoch, the Gornergrat and the Schilthorn summit all remain reachable in April, but the hiking-style excursions in between, such as Männlichen or Schynige Platte, wait until late May or June. Our comparison of Jungfraujoch, Gornergrat and the Schilthorn helps you pick the one summit worth your April day.
Sechseläuten, Cully Jazz and Zermatt Unplugged
- Cully Jazz Festival, April 2 to 10, 2027: concerts in a lakeside wine village of the Lavaux, with the festival bars set up in winegrowers' cellars.
- Zermatt Unplugged, April 6 to 10, 2027: acoustic concerts in the village and on the mountain at the end of the ski season.
- Sechseläuten, Zurich, April 18 and 19, 2027: the children's parade on Sunday, then on Monday the guilds march in historical costume and, at 6 p.m. on the Sechseläutenplatz, the Böögg, a snowman packed with fireworks, is set alight. Local lore says the faster its head explodes, the better the summer.
Where April already feels like spring
1991-2020 averages calculated from MeteoSwiss station data:
- Lake Geneva: Geneva 61°F and 41°F (16°C and 5°C), with about 192 hours of sun. Pully, just east of Lausanne, is milder at night, around 45°F. The Lavaux terraces and the Morges tulip festival (until May 9) are at their freshest.
- Valais: Sion, at the foot of the vineyards, reaches 64°F (18°C) and is the driest place on this list, with about 34 millimeters of rain in the month.
- Ticino: Lugano 62°F and 47°F (17°C and 8°C), but April is the start of the south's wetter season, with about 10 days of rain.
- Zurich and Lucerne: 59°F to 60°F by day, 41°F at night, and about 11 rainy days.
- Interlaken: 59°F and 39°F (15°C and 4°C).
- Zermatt: 50°F and 31°F (10°C and -1°C), still snowbound around the village.
- Engadine: Sils 44°F and 26°F (6°C and -3°C).
- Jungfraujoch: 21°F and 10°F (-6°C and -12°C).
Days are long again. On April 15 the sun sets in Zurich at 8:13 p.m., with about 13.5 hours of daylight, so a lake evening after a full day of sightseeing is realistic.
Rates and crowds between two seasons
Easter falls in March in 2027, so April has no major holiday rush beyond Easter Monday on March 29. Hotel rates in Lucerne, Interlaken and on Lake Geneva are at their spring low, and the mountain resorts, between seasons, are calm. Lake Lucerne steamers move from their winter timetable to the spring one on April 17, 2027, which brings more departures to Weggis, Vitznau and Flüelen.
Rain jacket, layers and summit gloves
- A waterproof jacket and an umbrella: April showers are frequent north of the Alps and in Ticino.
- Layers rather than one heavy coat: mornings around 40°F, afternoons near 60°F.
- Warm gloves and a hat for the summits, which are still in full winter.
- Comfortable shoes that cope with wet cobbles in Bern, Lucerne and Zurich.
April is a good month for travelers with reduced mobility who focus on cities and lakes: the old towns are free of ice, crowds are light, and SBB can arrange boarding assistance at the larger stations between Lucerne, Bern, Zurich and Lake Geneva when it is booked ahead. We add it to every rail leg that needs it.
April itineraries that work
Cities and lakes, with one summit. Lucerne, Bern and Lake Geneva with the Jungfraujoch or Gornergrat on the clearest day, a variation of our Switzerland in 7 Days. If you are torn between bases in central Switzerland, our Interlaken vs Lucerne comparison weighs them up; in April, Lucerne usually wins.
Ticino and Lake Maggiore. Milan, Lake Maggiore, Lugano and Zurich, following our Italy and Switzerland in 7 Days, with umbrellas in the bag and the gardens in bloom.
Jazz on the lake, music in the snow. Start with two nights on Lake Geneva for Cully Jazz, then ride up the Rhône valley to Zermatt for Zermatt Unplugged (April 6 to 10), the last ski days and an early Gornergrat train.
From May, the mountains wake up one lift at a time, as we describe in Switzerland in May. Send us your April dates, and we will check every lift, boat and hotel against them before you book: plan your trip.
