Mürren via ferrata, Switzerland to Italy by Train: Alps, Lucerne & Lake Como in 14 Days

July is Switzerland's festival month and the one month when absolutely everything is open: every mountain railway, every high pass, every lake steamer on its fullest timetable. It is also the warmest month of the year and, with August, the busiest and most expensive. The Montreux Jazz Festival runs from July 2 to 17, 2027, Paléo celebrates its 50th edition in Nyon, and the classical festivals of Verbier and Gstaad begin.

A July trip works very well if it is booked early and paced around two things: morning summits and afternoon storms. For how July compares with June and September, see our best time to visit Switzerland.

Festival summer on the lakes: July 2027 dates

  • OpenAir St. Gallen, July 1 to 4: a large rock and pop festival in a wooded valley outside St. Gallen.
  • Montreux Jazz Festival, July 2 to 17: the 61st edition, with paid concerts in the halls and free stages, bars and food stands along the lakeside quays.
  • Verbier Festival, July 14 to August 1: classical concerts and masterclasses in the Valais ski resort.
  • Gurtenfestival, July 14 to 18: Bern's hilltop festival, over five days for its 50th anniversary.
  • Moon&Stars, Locarno, July 15 to 25: open-air pop and rock concerts on the Piazza Grande.
  • Luzern Live, July 15 to 24: concerts on the Lucerne lakefront.
  • Gstaad Menuhin Festival, July 16 to September 4: concerts in village churches and a festival tent in the Saanenland.
  • Paléo Festival, Nyon, July 19 to 25: Switzerland's largest open-air festival, seven days instead of six for its 50th edition.
  • Lugano Estival Jazz: free jazz on the Piazza della Riforma; it ran July 9 to 11 in 2026, and the 2027 dates are not yet published.
  • July 31: on the eve of Swiss National Day, Basel holds its Rhine festival with fireworks at 11 p.m., and the Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen are lit up with fireworks at about 9:45 p.m. The Rhine Falls display depends on the summer's fire risk, so we confirm it closer to the date. More on National Day in Switzerland in August.

Montreux hotels fill for the whole festival and rates climb, so we often base Montreux Jazz travelers in Vevey or Lausanne, 10 to 20 minutes away by train.

Every lift, pass and steamer in service

In July, there is no closure to plan around. The Schynige Platte railway, the Pilatus cogwheel railway from Alpnachstad, the Harder Kulm and Niesen funiculars, the Grimsel, Furka, Susten, Nufenen and Gotthard passes, and the Great St Bernard are all running. The Glacier Express is on its summer timetable, and the Bernina Express ran five trains a day toward Tirano in summer 2026. Lake Lucerne keeps its summer timetable until September 5, 2027, and the Belle Époque paddle steamers of Lake Geneva are in summer service. On the Plateau Rosa above Zermatt, summer skiing on the glacier runs from May 1 to October 31, 2027.

Hot lakeshores, freezing summits

July is the warmest month at every station we track. 1991-2020 averages calculated from MeteoSwiss data:

Region Station Day Night Sunshine
Zurich and Lucerne Zurich 76°F (24°C) 58°F (15°C) 229 hours
Bernese Oberland Interlaken 76°F (25°C) 57°F (14°C) 223 hours
Bernese Oberland Jungfraujoch 38°F (3°C) 28°F (-2°C) 186 hours
Valais Zermatt / Sion 68°F / 81°F (20°C / 27°C) 47°F / 58°F (8°C / 14°C) 188 / 269 hours
Engadine Sils 64°F (18°C) 44°F (6°C) about 199 hours (Samedan)
Ticino Lugano 81°F (27°C) 65°F (18°C) 262 hours
Lake Geneva Geneva 80°F (27°C) 59°F (15°C) 271 hours

These are averages; heat waves now regularly push Lugano, Sion, Geneva and Basel above 90°F for several days. Air-conditioning is less common in Swiss hotels than in the US, so for July we choose hotels that have it in the lowlands, or we lean toward the mountains, where Zermatt, Mürren and the Engadine stay fresh. For travelers with limited mobility or heart conditions, we keep city sightseeing to the mornings.

Storms after lunch: planning around July weather

July rain in the north mostly comes from thunderstorms. Zurich and Lucerne average about 12 days with rain, often as a short, heavy downpour in the late afternoon after a sunny morning. Clouds build on the peaks from late morning, which is the main reason we put the Jungfraujoch, the Gornergrat or the Schilthorn on the first trains of the day. Long daylight helps: on July 15 the sun sets in Zurich at 9:20 p.m.

How we beat the July queues at the big summits

  • Go first, not second: the first departures to the Jungfraujoch and the Gornergrat are noticeably calmer and clearer than the late-morning trains.
  • Reserve what can be reserved: Glacier Express and Bernina Express seats, and seats on the Jungfrau Railway, which can be booked for a set departure.
  • Keep a flexible day: one open morning lets us move your summit to the clearest day.
  • Pick a quieter summit: our comparison of Jungfraujoch, Gornergrat and the Schilthorn shows which is easier on a busy day.

Swiss schools break up in early July, and families from across Europe arrive during the month. Hotel rates in Zermatt, Grindelwald, Lucerne and around Lake Geneva are at or near their annual peak, and we start booking July trips in winter.

Where to swim: lakes, rivers and lidos

July is warm enough to swim almost everywhere at lake level. Zurich has its historic lake and river baths, Lucerne its lakeside Lido, Geneva the Bains des Pâquis on a jetty in the harbor, and in Bern and Basel locals float down the Aare and the Rhine, carrying their clothes in a waterproof bag. Lake Lugano and Lake Maggiore are the warmest. Alpine lakes, such as the Oeschinensee above Kandersteg, stay cold.

Packing for 80°F in Lugano and freezing on the glacier

  • Light summer clothes for the lowlands, plus a fleece and windproof jacket for the summits.
  • Good walking shoes, sunglasses, a sun hat and high-SPF sunscreen.
  • A compact umbrella or rain shell for the afternoon storms.
  • A swimsuit and quick-dry towel.

Three July trips, from jazz to Lake Como

Alps to Lake Como. Lucerne, the Bernese Oberland and the Italian lakes over two weeks, with outdoor days in the mountains and swimming in Como: our Switzerland to Italy by train trip is built for summer.

Montreux Jazz and the mountains. Three nights on Lake Geneva for the festival and the Lavaux terraces, then the Jungfrau region and Zermatt, in the shape of our Switzerland in 7 Days.

Three countries by train. Brussels and Bruges, Alsace and then Switzerland as far as Zermatt in ten days with our Belgium, Alsace and Switzerland trip, which reaches the Alps when they are fully open.

Tell us early which festival or summit you have in mind, and we will lock in the seats and rooms that sell out first: start planning.

Frequently asked questions

Is July a good time to visit Switzerland?

Yes, if you book early. Every mountain railway, pass and lake steamer is running, the days are long, and the festival calendar is full. July is also the warmest, busiest and most expensive month, with afternoon thunderstorms in the mountains. Plan summits for the mornings and reserve panoramic trains and hotels months ahead.

How hot does Switzerland get in July?

On average, highs are about 76°F in Zurich and Lucerne, 80°F to 81°F in Geneva, Sion and Lugano, and 68°F in Zermatt. Heat waves can push the lowlands above 90°F for several days. At the Jungfraujoch the average July high is only 38°F, so bring a warm layer for the summits.

When is the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2027?

The 61st Montreux Jazz Festival runs from July 2 to July 17, 2027. Paid concerts take place in the festival halls, while free stages, bars and food stands line the lakeside quays. Montreux hotels fill up for the whole period, so staying in Vevey or Lausanne, a short train ride away, is often easier.

Is it crowded at the Jungfraujoch in July?

Yes, July and August are its busiest months, with tour groups arriving from mid-morning. Taking one of the first trains of the day makes the biggest difference, both for crowds and for clear views before the afternoon clouds. We reserve seats on the Jungfrau Railway for a set departure and keep a flexible day, so you can go up on the clearest morning.
