Bern or Appenzell, Italy & Switzerland in 7 Days: Milan, Lake Maggiore, Lugano & Zurich

From mid-October, the Swiss mountains turn gold: the larch forests of the Engadine and the Valais change color, Ticino roasts its chestnuts, and the last grapes come in on the Lavaux terraces. It is also the month when the summer machinery winds down: the Glacier Express takes its autumn break, the high passes close, and toward the end of the month many lifts stop for revision. Plan around those dates and October is quiet, colorful and good value.

We treat October as two different months. The first half still feels like late summer with fewer people; the second half is autumn proper, with shorter days and more closures. Our best time to visit Switzerland guide sets it against the rest of the year.

Larch gold in the Engadine and the Valais

Larches are the only conifers in the Alps that lose their needles, and before they do, whole hillsides turn yellow and then deep gold. In an average year, the color peaks in the second half of October. The Upper Engadine around St. Moritz, Pontresina and Sils is the classic place, with gold forests reflected in the lakes; the tourist office runs a live larch tracker each autumn. In the Valais, the larch woods around Zermatt, below the Gornergrat, and in the side valleys of the Rhône turn at the same time.

The timing shifts by a week or two with altitude and the weather, so we plan larch trips with a few flexible days rather than a fixed date.

Chestnuts, Merlot and grotto lunches in Ticino

South of the Alps, October is chestnut season. Roasted chestnuts are sold in the squares of Lugano, Locarno and Bellinzona, chestnut dishes appear on the menus of the grotti, the rustic stone taverns in the woods, and villages hold chestnut festivals, such as the one in Ascona; their dates are published locally each year. It is also the end of the Merlot harvest, the grape that makes most Ticino red wine.

Swiss families travel south during the cantonal autumn school holidays in the first half of October, so Lugano and Locarno are livelier then than later in the month.

The closing calendar: autumn 2026 and 2027

Published dates so far. Where 2027 is not yet announced, the 2026 pattern is a good guide:

Männlichen gondola and Wengen cableway Closed from October 26 to December 11 Closed October 25 to December 11

Lauterbrunnen to Mürren via Grütschalp Closed October 26 to November 6 Closed October 25 to November 5

Lake Lucerne boats Winter timetable from October 19 Winter timetable from October 18
Bernina Express Winter timetable from October 26, with fewer trains Not yet announced
High passes (Grimsel, Furka, Susten, Nufenen) Closed for the winter by October 20 Closed on October 27 in 2025

The Jungfraujoch, the Gornergrat, the Schilthorn summit, Titlis and Rigi stay open through October. The useful detail for late October: with the Pilatus gondola closed, Pilatus Kulm is reached from Alpnachstad by the cogwheel railway, which still runs, and we often combine it with a lake boat from Lucerne before the boats switch to winter service.

In the Engadine, the Muottas Muragl funicular ended its summer season on October 25, 2026, with extra days in good weather until November 1. Diavolezza opened for autumn skiing on Wednesdays and weekends from October 24, 2026.

Shorter days, fog below, sun above

1991-2020 averages calculated from MeteoSwiss station data:

  • Zurich: 57°F and 45°F (14°C and 7°C), 108 hours of sunshine.
  • Lucerne: 58°F and 45°F (14°C and 7°C).
  • Interlaken: 58°F and 43°F (14°C and 6°C).
  • Zermatt: 52°F and 34°F (11°C and 1°C), with 133 hours of sunshine, more than Zurich.
  • Sils, Engadine: 48°F by day and just below freezing at night (9°C and -1°C).
  • Lugano: 62°F and 50°F (17°C and 10°C), but October is wet in Ticino, with about 150 millimeters of rain on average.
  • Geneva: 60°F and 45°F (16°C and 7°C).
  • Jungfraujoch weather station: 28°F and 19°F (-2°C and -7°C), with 144 hours of sun.

From late October, a layer of low cloud often settles over the Swiss Plateau for days while the Alps stay in sunshine, a pattern that grows stronger in November. If Zurich is gray, a train ride up to Rigi or the Jungfraujoch often lifts you into blue sky. Daylight falls to about 10 hours and 45 minutes by mid-month. Clocks go back on the last Sunday of October (October 25, 2026, and October 31, 2027), after which the sun sets in Zurich around 5:20 p.m., and earlier each day.

October fairs: OLMA, Herbstmesse, Expovina

  • OLMA, St. Gallen: the large agricultural and food fair of eastern Switzerland, with cattle, cheese and the famous St. Gallen bratwurst, runs October 14 to 24, 2027.
  • Basler Herbstmesse: Switzerland's oldest fair spreads its rides and stalls across Basel's squares from October 24 to November 8, 2026, with the Petersplatz market open until November 10.
  • Expovina, Zurich: wine tastings aboard ships moored at Bürkliplatz, October 29 to November 12, 2026.

Why October is cheap, and when it isn't

After the first week, October is one of the least expensive months in the mountain resorts, and many hotels close in late October for their own break before the winter season. That matters: in Zermatt, Grindelwald and Wengen, the choice of open hotels narrows sharply in the last ten days of the month, so we book early even though prices are low. Lugano and Locarno stay busier during the Swiss autumn holidays.

Warm layers for golden-larch walks

  • A warm jacket and layers; mornings in the mountains are often below freezing.
  • Waterproof hiking boots for larch walks, where trails can be icy in the shade.
  • An umbrella for Ticino.
  • Sunglasses, since the low autumn sun is bright at altitude.

Following the gold: October routes

Glacier Express and gold larches. In the first ten days of October, the Glacier Express from Zermatt to St. Moritz, before its break, then the Bernina Express to Tirano, as in our Legendary Swiss Trains. Later in the month, we reverse the logic: Engadine larches first, with the Bernina line covered in our Bernina Express guide.

Ticino in chestnut season. Lugano, Lake Maggiore and a grotto lunch, with Milan and Zurich at either end: our Italy and Switzerland in 7 Days.

Lavaux, Zermatt and Lucerne. The end of the harvest above Lake Geneva, larches around Zermatt and the Gornergrat, then Lucerne and Pilatus by cogwheel, a late-season version of our Switzerland in 7 Days.

November is the quietest month of all, described in Switzerland in November. If October is your month, tell us your dates and we will check every closure against them before you commit: start planning.

Frequently asked questions

Is October a good time to visit Switzerland?

Yes, especially the first half, when most mountain railways still run and crowds are low. The second half brings golden larches and lower prices but also closures: the Glacier Express pauses from mid-October to early December, the high passes close and many lifts stop for revision. Cities, lakes and the main summits remain open.

When do the larches turn gold in Switzerland?

In an average year, the larch forests of the Engadine and the Valais are at their most golden in the second half of October. Timing varies by a week or two with altitude and weather, so a few flexible days help. The Engadine tourist office publishes a live larch tracker each autumn.

Does the Glacier Express run in October?

Only in the first part of the month. In 2026 the last trains ran on October 10, and service resumes with the winter timetable on December 5. The 2027 autumn break has not been announced yet. If the Glacier Express matters to you, plan it for early October or travel in winter.

Is Pilatus open in October?

Yes. In 2026, the gondola from Kriens and the Dragon Ride cableway closed for revision from October 19 to November 27, but the cogwheel railway from Alpnachstad kept running until November 29. In late October, the way up is therefore from Alpnachstad, reached by train or by boat from Lucerne.
