Switzerland in 10 days: three ways to do it

Our designers’ take

Ten days is the length we recommend to people who ask for Switzerland "done properly." It keeps the four essential areas of the 7-day loop and adds either Ticino and the Bernina line or a third night in the mountains, so no day is only a train day. We build 10-day trips to order; the routes below are the ones we draw most often, priced within 48 hours.

  1. 1

    The full circle

2 nights in Lucerne (Pilatus Golden Round Trip, Mount Rigi), 3 nights in Grindelwald or Wengen (Jungfraujoch, the Männlichen panorama hike, Lauterbrunnen by e-bike), 2 nights in Zermatt (Gornergrat, Matterhorn Museum), the Glacier Express to Chur or St. Moritz for 1 night, the Bernina Express and a transfer to Lugano for 2 nights, out via Zurich (2 h 15 from Lugano). The first week mirrors Switzerland in 7 Days; the train legs come from Legendary Swiss Trains.

  2. 2

    Lake Geneva first

3 nights in Montreux (Lavaux by tuk-tuk, Chillon Castle, Glacier 3000, the Chocolate Train to Gruyères), 3 nights in Grindelwald, 2 nights in Zermatt, 2 nights in Lucerne. This is the first ten days of our 12-day scenic train itinerary, which adds St. Moritz and Zurich; take the 12-day version if your flights allow, from 3,499 € per person.

  3. 3

    Winter

3 nights in Zermatt, 3 nights in Grindelwald or Wengen, the Glacier Express to St. Moritz for 3 nights, with skiing or winter walks in each, and the Christmas markets of Montreux or Basel at either end in December.

Take 7 days if you only have one week of vacation; take 14 days to add Lake Como and Milan. The Switzerland guide covers seasons and the Swiss Travel Pass.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ideal 10-day Switzerland route?

Lucerne (2 nights), Jungfrau region (3), Zermatt (2), Glacier Express to Chur or St. Moritz (1), Lugano (2), out of Zurich. It covers the central lakes, the two great mountain areas, the most famous train and the Italian-speaking south, with no one-night stop except the Glacier Express night.

Is 10 days in Switzerland too much for one country?

Not if you like mountains, lakes and trains. Every region feels different: German-speaking Lucerne, French-speaking Montreux, Italian-speaking Lugano. If you prefer variety of culture over variety of scenery, make it 7 days in Switzerland and 3 on Lake Como or in Alsace.

How much does a 10-day Switzerland trip cost?

Expect 2,800 to 3,800 € per person with 3* to 4* hotels, Swiss Travel Pass, panoramic train reservations, four or five guided excursions and breakfast, flights excluded. Our 12-day version with 3* hotels is 3,499 € per person; 4* upgrades in Zermatt and St. Moritz add roughly 400 to 600 €.

When should I go for 10 days?

June to September for the full itinerary with open hikes and the Chocolate Train. September is our pick: stable weather, harvest in Lavaux, quieter Jungfraujoch. For a winter version, mid-January to early March, with the Glacier Express at its most spectacular under snow.
