June gives Switzerland its longest days and its loudest waterfalls. Around June 21, Zurich has close to 16 hours of daylight, with sunset after 9:20 p.m., and the snowmelt sends the Staubbach and the other falls of the Lauterbrunnen valley down at full force. During the month, the last mountain railways open, the high road passes clear, and the lake steamers run their summer timetable, all before the July crowds and July prices arrive.
It is one of the two months we recommend most, with September. The one caveat is the high country: trails above about 6,500 feet can hold snow well into June, so a June trip is about lakes, trains and mid-altitude walks more than glacier-edge hikes. Our best time to visit Switzerland guide compares June with the other seasons.
Nearly sixteen hours of daylight
On June 15, the sun rises in Zurich at 5:28 a.m. and sets at 9:23 p.m. In practice, that means two days in one. We often send travelers up a summit on the first train, when the air is clearest and the platforms are empty, and keep the late afternoon for a lake cruise or a walk through Lucerne's old town in the evening light. On the Gornergrat and the Jungfraujoch, early trains make a real difference in June, because clouds tend to build on the peaks after lunch as the month warms up.
Snowmelt season: full waterfalls, snowy high trails
June is peak water. The Staubbach falls over the cliff above Lauterbrunnen village, the glacier-fed Trümmelbach falls thunder inside the mountain, and the Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen carry some of their highest volumes of the year.
The same snowmelt explains why the high trails open late. In 2027, the Schynige Platte railway, with its alpine garden and ridge walk to the Faulhorn, starts on June 5. Muottas Muragl above the Engadine opened its summer season on June 6 in 2026. Around Grindelwald First, Mürren and Zermatt, trails below about 6,500 feet are usually clear by mid-June; above that, expect snow patches until late June or early July. When we design a hiking week for June, we pick routes by altitude and check snow reports a few days before.
The pass roads reopen: three years of opening dates
The high passes have no fixed opening date; crews clear them when the snow allows. These are the actual opening dates of recent years:

June weather, valley floor to glacier
1991-2020 averages calculated from MeteoSwiss station data:
- Zurich: 72°F by day, 55°F at night (22°C and 13°C), about 207 hours of sun and 12 days with rain, often as short showers or evening storms.
- Lucerne: 73°F and 55°F (23°C and 13°C), and wetter than Zurich, with about 156 millimeters of rain, because the city sits against the Alps.
- Interlaken: 73°F and 54°F (23°C and 12°C).
- Jungfraujoch weather station: 35°F and 25°F (2°C and -4°C).
- Zermatt: 64°F and 44°F (18°C and 7°C); on the Gornergrat, highs average 44°F (7°C).
- Sils, Engadine: 60°F and 40°F (16°C and 5°C).
- Lugano: 77°F and 61°F (25°C and 16°C), with about 229 hours of sunshine.
- Geneva: 76°F and 55°F (24°C and 13°C), and around 247 hours of sun, the sunniest place on this list.
Art Basel, Fête de la Musique and the run-up to festival summer
- Art Basel, June 17 to 20, 2027: the world's leading modern and contemporary art fair fills every hotel in Basel and many in Zurich, with rates to match. Book early or avoid Basel that week.
- Fête de la Musique, Geneva, June 18 to 20, 2027: free concerts across the city.
- Festival summer starts right after: OpenAir St. Gallen runs from July 1 to 4 and the Montreux Jazz Festival from July 2 to 17, 2027, so the last days of June are when lakeside hotels in Montreux start filling.
The quiet weeks before the July rush
Swiss schools are in session until early July, and most European families travel later, so the first three weeks of June are calm on the trains and summits. Hotel rates rise during the month and reach their summer peak in July. We still book the Glacier Express and Bernina Express several months ahead for June, because the panoramic cars are popular with groups. Lake Lucerne runs its summer timetable from May 22 to September 5, 2027, and the Belle Époque paddle steamers on Lake Geneva are in regular summer service.
A June packing list for hikers and lake swimmers
- Hiking shoes with good grip, plus poles if you plan steep descents on wet trails.
- A light rain shell for afternoon storms.
- A fleece and a warm hat for summits around freezing.
- A swimsuit: the first lake baths open in Zurich, Lucerne and Geneva, though the water is still cool in early June.
- Sun protection, since June has the strongest UV of the year at altitude.
Three June routes
The scenic trains at full length. Lavaux, the Jungfraujoch, Zermatt and the Glacier Express in 12 days, as in our Switzerland by Train in 12 Days. Long days mean every panoramic ride happens in daylight. Our article on the Grand Train Tour of Switzerland explains how the route links together.
A first hiking week. Lucerne, Grindelwald or Wengen, and Zermatt, with walks chosen by altitude, built on our Switzerland in 7 Days.
Lakes and passes. A slower trip through our mountains and lakes collection, with a postbus over the Grimsel and Furka in the last week of June.
July brings the festivals and the crowds, as described in Switzerland in July. For a June trip, write to us early, and we will set each summit and hike at the right altitude for your dates: plan your trip.
