Munich to Nuremberg, Germany Christmas Markets by Train: Munich to Berlin in 9 Days

November is Switzerland's quietest month, and the one that most needs a plan. The lowlands often sit under a ceiling of gray cloud for days, many mountain lifts and hotels close for their annual revision, and the ski season only starts in the last ten days. In return, prices are the lowest of the year, museums and cities are calm, and from November 19, 2026, the first Christmas markets open in Zurich, Geneva and Bern, with Lucerne and Montreux following a day or two later.

The key to a good November trip is altitude. When Zurich is gray, the sun is very often shining a few thousand feet higher. For the rest of the year, see our best time to visit Switzerland.

Above the fog: the November trick

In calm autumn and winter weather, cold air collects over the Swiss Plateau and forms a lid of low cloud, the Hochnebel, often with its top somewhere between 2,500 and 5,000 feet. Below it, Zurich, Lucerne and Bern stay gray and damp; above it, the Alps are in sunshine with a white sea of cloud below. The MeteoSwiss averages show it clearly: Zurich gets about 60 hours of sunshine in November, the Jungfraujoch about 107, Zermatt about 90 and Lugano, south of the Alps, about 108.

Practical use: on a gray morning in Lucerne, the Vitznau rack railway up the Rigi, which runs all year, is our first choice to climb above the cloud. From Interlaken, the Harder Kulm funicular runs until November 29, 2026. We check the webcams and the forecast for the cloud top each morning and adjust.

Revision season: what is closed in November 2026

Excursion November 2026
Jungfraujoch Open; the Eiger Express is closed November 9 to 20, so the way up is by the Wengernalp railway from Grindelwald to Kleine Scheidegg
Wengen to Kleine Scheidegg Closed November 9 to December 4
Grindelwald-First Closed until November 27
Männlichen Closed until December 11
Gornergrat Railway No trains November 2 to 14 for construction work, then a reduced weekday service until November 27
Schilthorn Summit cableways on their normal timetable
Pilatus Cogwheel railway from Alpnachstad until November 29; gondola and Dragon Ride closed until November 27
Rigi Vitznau and Arth-Goldau railways run; Weggis cableway closed November 16 to 20 and 23 to 27
Glacier Express No trains until December 4
Bernina Express Runs on its winter timetable; trains from Chur go via the Vereina tunnel instead of the Albula line from October 29 to November 13
Titlis Open; the rotating Rotair cabin is closed until December 11, and the Titlis Connect cableway takes visitors to the summit

In the Engadine, Muottas Muragl is closed until December 19 and Diavolezza runs daily only until November 15. Many hotels in Grindelwald, Wengen, Mürren, Zermatt and St. Moritz close for several weeks, so the choice of rooms in mountain villages is narrow until early December.

Weather: gray lowlands, bright summits

1991-2020 averages calculated from MeteoSwiss station data:

  • Zurich: 46°F by day, 37°F at night (8°C and 3°C), about 10 days with rain.

  • Geneva: 49°F and 37°F (9°C and 3°C).
  • Jungfraujoch weather station: 20°F and 11°F (-6°C and -12°C).

Zibelemärit and the first Christmas markets

  • Basler Herbstmesse: Basel's autumn fair runs until November 8, 2026.
  • Expovina: wine tastings on ships at Zurich's Bürkliplatz until November 12, 2026.
  • Zibelemärit, Bern, Monday, November 23, 2026: the onion market fills the old town from 5 a.m. with braided onions and garlic, onion tarts, mulled wine and confetti battles.
  • Christmas markets opening: Zurich's markets in the main station hall (Polarzauber), on the Münsterhof, in the Niederdorf, at Werdmühleplatz with its Singing Christmas Tree, and at Bellevue all open on November 19, 2026. Geneva's Noël au Quai and Bern's Sternenmarkt also open on November 19, Montreux Noël on November 20, Lucerne's Advent season and ice rink on November 21 (the Franziskanerplatz market follows later; its 2026 dates are not yet published), Basel's markets on the Münsterplatz and Barfüsserplatz, St. Gallen's Sternenstadt and the new Basler Wienachtsdorf on November 26, and Einsiedeln's market on November 27.

Thanksgiving week in Switzerland

Thanksgiving falls on November 26, 2026, and the week around it is a good one for American travelers: the Christmas markets have just opened, the first ski areas are running (Wengen, Mürren-Schilthorn and Corvatsch from November 21, Zermatt and St. Moritz Corviglia from November 28), and hotel rates in the cities are still at their November level. Zermatt's Matterhorn Glacier Paradise has been open for skiing since November 1.

The lowest prices of the year, and the catch

November is the least expensive month for city hotels in Zurich, Lucerne, Bern and Geneva, and trains are at their emptiest. The catch is choice in the mountains: with hotels closed and lifts in revision until the last week, a classic Alps itinerary is hard to build before about November 20. For travelers with reduced mobility, the city-focused November trip has an advantage: no snow or ice yet in most old towns, and quiet trains with easy access to assistance.

An umbrella below, sunglasses above

  • A warm, waterproof coat and an umbrella for the gray lowlands.
  • Shoes that stay dry on wet cobblestones.
  • A hat, gloves and sunglasses for trips above the cloud.
  • A light warm layer for heated museums and trains.

Where a November trip works best

Christmas markets and mountains at Thanksgiving. Zurich and Lucerne for their first market weeks, the Rigi above the fog, then Montreux Noël and the Lavaux, a seasonal version of our Switzerland in 7 Days.

Switzerland and Germany by train. Start with Basel and Zurich, then continue to the German markets, which open in the last week of November, with our Germany Christmas Markets by Train trip.

Cities and museums. Basel's Kunstmuseum and Fondation Beyeler, Bern's old town and Zentrum Paul Klee, and Zurich's Kunsthaus, with one sunny day in the mountains chosen from the forecast.

From December, the ski season and the Glacier Express return, as described in Switzerland in December. If November suits your calendar, tell us your dates and we will build around what is open that week: plan your trip.

Frequently asked questions

Is November a good time to visit Switzerland?

For cities, museums, Christmas markets from the third week and low prices, yes. For mountains, it is the most limited month: many lifts close for revision, mountain hotels take their break, the Glacier Express does not run, and skiing only starts around November 21. The lowlands are often gray, while the summits are frequently sunny.

When do Swiss Christmas markets open in 2026?

Zurich's markets, Geneva's Noël au Quai and Bern's Sternenmarkt open on November 19, 2026. Montreux Noël opens on November 20, Lucerne's Advent season starts on November 21, and Basel's Münsterplatz and Barfüsserplatz markets open on November 26, as does St. Gallen's Sternenstadt. Most markets close on December 23 or 24.

Is the Jungfraujoch open in November?

Yes, it is open every day of the year. In 2026, the Eiger Express gondola is closed from November 9 to 20 for revision, so the route is by the Wengernalp railway from Grindelwald to Kleine Scheidegg, then the Jungfrau Railway. The line from Wengen to Kleine Scheidegg is closed from November 9 to December 4.

Can you ski in Switzerland in November?

Yes, from late in the month. Zermatt's Matterhorn Glacier Paradise is open from November 1, 2026, Wengen, Mürren-Schilthorn and Corvatsch open on November 21, and Zermatt's main areas and St. Moritz Corviglia on November 28. Early-season snow varies a lot, so we confirm conditions a week before.
