Switzerland in 7 days: three ways to do it

Our designers’ take

Seven days in Switzerland covers more than most travelers expect, because the trains do the work: Lucerne to Interlaken in under 2 hours, Interlaken to Zermatt about 2 h 15, Zermatt to Montreux 2 h 30. The country is small, the timetable is exact, and you can change base every two nights and still be on a mountain by 10 a.m.

  1. 1

    The classic loop

1 night in Lucerne (Chapel Bridge, a boat on the lake), 2 nights in Grindelwald (Mount Pilatus on the way, fondue, then Jungfraujoch or an e-bike day in Lauterbrunnen), 2 nights in Zermatt (Sunnegga at sunset, the Gornergrat gastronomic route), 1 night in Montreux (Chillon Castle, Lavaux at sunset), out via Geneva. This is our Switzerland in 7 Days itinerary, from 1,999 € per person in 4* hotels.

  2. 2

    The scenic trains

Interlaken, the GoldenPass Express to Montreux, Zermatt and the Gornergrat, the Glacier Express to Chur, the Bernina Express to Lugano, then the Gotthard tunnel and a Lake Lucerne boat. Four famous lines in one week: Legendary Swiss Trains, from 2,199 € per person.

  3. 3

    Italian lakes finish

Milan, Lake Maggiore, Lake Orta, Lugano and Zurich with an Appenzell cheese day, our Italy and Switzerland in 7 days, from 2,999 € per person.

Seven days is right if the Matterhorn and Jungfrau are the goal. Choose 10 days to add Lugano and the Bernina line at a slower pace, or 14 days to combine the Alps with the Italian lakes. Valentine and our Alps team send a priced proposal with trains and hotels within 48 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see Zermatt, Jungfraujoch and Lucerne in 7 days?

Yes, that is exactly our 7-day loop: Lucerne, two nights in the Jungfrau region, two nights in Zermatt, one night on Lake Geneva. The longest train leg is 2 h 30. You will have one full mountain day in each place plus the journeys between, which are scenic in themselves.

Do I need the Swiss Travel Pass for a week?

For any itinerary with three or more train days, yes. It covers trains, boats and city transport, gives 50 percent off most mountain railways (Gornergrat, Pilatus, Jungfraujoch) and free museum entry. We include it in our packages and book seat reservations for the Glacier Express and Bernina Express, which the pass does not cover.

Which is better for a week, Zermatt or Grindelwald?

Both, two nights each. Grindelwald gives Jungfraujoch, Lauterbrunnen and easy hikes; Zermatt gives the Matterhorn, the Gornergrat and a car-free village. If you must choose one, Zermatt for scenery and food, Grindelwald for families and activity variety. They are 2 h 15 apart by train.

What does a 7-day Switzerland trip cost?

From 1,999 € per person with 4* hotels, Swiss Travel Pass, mountain excursions and breakfast; 2,199 € with the four panoramic trains; 2,999 € for the Italy and Switzerland lakes version with private boats and a spa day. Switzerland's restaurant prices are the main extra. International flights are not included.

Two minutes, three steps. Free and without obligation.
