Italy in 10 days: three ways to do it

Our designers’ take

Ten days lets you keep the lakes at a slow pace and add one more destination by high-speed train: Venice (2 h 30 from Milan), Piedmont's wine country (Turin is 1 hour), or the Swiss side of the Alps. We build every 10-day Italy trip to order from the routes below; Emilie prices it, with hotels and boats, within 48 hours.

  1. 1

    Milan, the lakes and Venice

2 nights in Milan (the Last Supper, the Duomo terraces, a pizza and gelato class), 3 nights on Lake Como with a private water taxi day to Villa Carlotta, Villa del Balbianello and Bellagio, 2 nights in Stresa for the Borromean Islands and Lake Orta, Frecciarossa to Venice for 3 nights with a Murano and Burano boat day. The lake days are the ones in our 14-day Switzerland to Italy itinerary.

  2. 2

    Milan, the lakes and Piedmont

2 nights in Milan, 3 nights on Lake Maggiore and Orta, 3 nights in the Langhe around Alba for Barolo and Barbaresco tastings and, from October, white truffles, 1 night in Turin. A driver takes you between wineries; nobody drives after lunch.

  3. 3

    The lakes and Swiss Ticino

Milan, Maggiore, Orta, Lugano and the Olive Road to Gandria, then Zurich or Lucerne with an Appenzell day and the Bürgenstock spa. That is our Italy and Switzerland in 7 Days stretched to 10 with two extra nights on Como and one in Lucerne.

With only 7 days, stay on the lakes. With two weeks, the Alps and lakes together are the strongest route: see Europe in 14 days. Seasons, boats and the Last Supper ticket timing are in the Italy guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I combine the Italian lakes with Venice in 10 days?

Comfortably. Milan, Como and Maggiore take six or seven nights; Venice is 2 h 30 by Frecciarossa from Milan and deserves three nights. Fly into Milan and out of Venice so you never backtrack. We book the train in Business class with seat reservations and a water taxi from Venice station to your hotel.

Is 10 days in Italy better in the north or should I add Rome and Florence?

With 10 days, pick one: the north (Milan, lakes, Venice or Piedmont) or the center (Rome, Florence, Tuscany). Adding Rome to a lakes trip means two four-hour train days and two-night stops everywhere. Our expertise is the north and its link to Switzerland; for the center we can advise but usually suggest a separate trip.

When is the best time for 10 days in northern Italy?

May, June and September. The lake gardens peak in May, September has warm water and the Piedmont harvest, and Venice is manageable outside July and August. October adds white truffles in Alba but shorter days on the lakes. Avoid mid-July to late August for crowds and heat in Venice.

What does a 10-day Italy trip cost?

Roughly 3,500 to 4,800 € per person with 4* lakefront hotels, private boats on Como and Maggiore, Frecciarossa tickets, private transfers, guided days and breakfast, flights excluded. A Venice finish with a canal-view room runs higher than a Piedmont finish. Your 48-hour proposal itemizes every inclusion.
