Germany in 7 days: three ways to do it

Our designers’ take

A week in Germany works best as one region plus one big city. For most first visits that region is Bavaria and the Romantic Road, with Munich as the city; Berlin is the alternative if the 20th century interests you more than castles. Our designers for Germany, Lucie (two years working there, fluent German) and Aurélie (Alsace, on the border), price any of these routes within 48 hours.

  1. 1

    Frankfurt to Munich by car

2 nights in Heidelberg (castle, old town, the Student Jail), 1 night in Rothenburg ob der Tauber inside the walls, 1 night in Nuremberg (Courtroom 600, the old town), 3 nights in Munich with a beer and Oktoberfest museum evening and a guided, skip-the-line day at Neuschwanstein. This is our published Germany Road Trip in 7 Days, from 1,299 € per person with 4* hotels and the rental car.

  2. 2

    Munich and Berlin by train

3 nights in Munich (Marienplatz, a day trip to Salzburg in 2 hours by train, or Neuschwanstein), ICE to Berlin in about 4 hours (or via Nuremberg and Dresden with a night in each), 3 nights in Berlin for the Wall, Museum Island and Kreuzberg. In December this becomes the first seven days of our Christmas markets by train itinerary.

  3. 3

The Rhine and the Black Forest

2 nights in Cologne or the Rhine Gorge (castles, Riesling, a river cruise), 2 nights in Heidelberg, 2 nights in the Black Forest around Baden-Baden or Freiburg, with an easy exit via Basel or Strasbourg and the option to add Alsace.

Take 10 days to combine Bavaria with Dresden and Berlin, the shape of our Christmas itinerary. Seven days is right if Neuschwanstein and Munich are the point. Read the Germany guide for seasons, Oktoberfest timing and trains.

Frequently asked questions

Is 7 days enough for Munich, Neuschwanstein and the Romantic Road?

Yes. Our road trip does it with 2 nights in Heidelberg, 1 in Rothenburg, 1 in Nuremberg and 3 in Munich, including a full Neuschwanstein day. If you fly into Munich rather than Frankfurt, drop Heidelberg and add a night in the Bavarian Alps around Garmisch or Berchtesgaden.

Car or train for a week in Germany?

Car for the Romantic Road, Neuschwanstein and the Black Forest, where the small towns are the point and trains are slow. Train for Munich, Nuremberg, Dresden and Berlin, which are linked by ICE in one to three hours. Our two Germany packages reflect this: the Bavaria trip is self-drive, the Christmas trip is rail.

Can I include Salzburg or Austria in a Germany week?

Salzburg is a 2-hour train ride from Munich and makes an easy day trip or overnight; our Christmas itinerary includes a guided food and history day there. Innsbruck is also close to Neuschwanstein. We handle the cross-border tickets and hotels as part of the same proposal.

What does a week in Germany cost?

From 1,299 € per person for the Bavaria road trip with 4* hotels, car rental, guided walks and breakfast, excluding fuel and flights. A Munich and Berlin rail week with first-class ICE and private city tours runs about 1,700 to 2,200 € per person. Oktoberfest dates add 50 to 100 percent to Munich hotel rates.
