Travelling by car along the southern coast of France was relatively easily finding great things to see - Pone du Gard, Baux de Provence town and castle, St. Paul de Vence and finally Nice. US and Canadian licenses are accepted for rentals in both countries. France officially recommends an International Driving Permit alongside your license, and it costs little from AAA or CAA, so we suggest getting one. Germany does not require it for short stays. Bring a credit card in the driver's name for the deposit. ### Are automatic cars available? Yes, but they are the minority in Europe and sell out in summer, so we reserve an automatic as soon as your dates are set. Expect a compact or mid-size; large SUVs are impractical in Dordogne villages and medieval centers. Child seats and a second driver are added on request. ### What about tolls, fuel and parking? French autoroutes are tolled (Bordeaux to Sarlat about 15 €), German Autobahns are free. Fuel is roughly twice the US price per gallon. Our hotels have parking, and we tell you where to leave the car outside pedestrian centers such as Sarlat and Rothenburg. Fuel, tolls and parking outside hotels are not included. ### Is a road trip or a train trip better for a first visit to Europe? Train for cities and Switzerland; car for rural regions. Our road trips are built so you only drive between countryside bases, with guided days arranged so nobody drives after a tasting. If you would rather not drive at all, every route on this page can be done with a private driver for a higher price. ### How far ahead should I book a road trip? Three to four months for the car, especially an automatic in July or August, and for the balloon and paragliding slots in Bordeaux, which depend on weather and fill up. Neuschwanstein tickets with a timed entry should be reserved as soon as dates are fixed. Shoulder-season trips can be arranged in six weeks.
