# Zurich to Lucerne by Train: Times, Fares and a Scenic Detour

Zurich to Lucerne by train in 41 minutes: 2026 fares, trains from Zurich Airport, private driver prices, Swiss Travel Pass, and the Rigi detour by boat.

Zurich to Lucerne by train takes 41 to 50 minutes on a direct InterRegio from Zurich HB, with at least two departures an hour from early morning to late evening. In 2026 a full-fare second-class ticket costs about CHF 27 (around $33) one way, and the trip is fully covered by the Swiss Travel Pass. It is the easiest rail journey in Switzerland, so the real questions are which train to take, how to handle the airport, and whether to make a detour over the Rigi.

> **Quick answer**
>
> - **Fastest:** direct InterRegio, 41 minutes, Zürich HB to Luzern; other direct trains take about 50 to 60 minutes.
> - **Price in 2026:** about CHF 27 one way in second class at full fare, less with a Supersaver ticket, half with a Half Fare Card, included in the Swiss Travel Pass.
> - **How often:** at least two direct trains an hour, all day.
> - **Stations:** Zürich HB to Luzern, which sits on the lakefront. From Zurich Airport, allow about 1 h 05 min with a change at Zürich HB.

## Zurich to Lucerne: every option compared

| Option | Time | Price range (2026) | Comfort | Luggage |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Direct train from Zürich HB | 41 to 60 min | about CHF 27 full fare, less with Supersaver | First or second class, no reservation needed | Racks above and between seats |
| Train from Zurich Airport | about 1 h 05 min, 1 change | a few francs more | Easy, but a change with bags | Same |
| Private driver from Zurich Airport | about 50 min for 66 km | from about CHF 130 per sedan, around CHF 250 for a luxury sedan | Door to door after a long flight | Unlimited |
| Rental car | about 50 min | rental, fuel, CHF 40 motorway vignette, hotel parking | Flexible | Unlimited |
| Scenic detour via the Rigi and Lake Lucerne | a full day | covered by the Swiss Travel Pass | The most beautiful way in | Ship big bags ahead |

## The best route, step by step

1. **Board at Zürich HB.** Direct trains to Lucerne are marked "Luzern" on the boards; the fastest run through the Zimmerberg base tunnel and take 41 minutes. You do not need a seat reservation, and a standard ticket is valid on any train that day.
2. **Ride south.** The train stops at Zug, then crosses farmland toward the Alps. On a clear day the Rigi and Pilatus appear ahead as you approach Lucerne.
3. **Arrive at Luzern.** The station opens onto the lake, next to the KKL concert hall and the boat piers. The Chapel Bridge is a five-minute walk, and the lakefront hotels on the Schweizerhofquai are about ten.

If you land at Zurich Airport, the airport station is directly under the terminal. Most journeys to Lucerne need a change at Zürich HB, usually with a short wait. After an overnight flight with large bags, this is the one place in Switzerland where we often prefer a driver.

## Where to sit

On a 41-minute trip, seat side matters little: much of the fastest route is in tunnels or crosses open countryside. Take the upper deck of a double-deck train for the best view of the mountains on the approach to Lucerne. If you are carrying large suitcases, sit near the doors, where the racks between seat backs take bigger bags.

## The scenic alternative: over the Rigi

When travelers arrive in Zurich the day before, we often turn this short transfer into the best day of the trip:

1. Train from Zurich to **Arth-Goldau**, in under an hour.
2. The **Rigi cogwheel railway** up to Rigi Kulm, with views over Lake Lucerne and Lake Zug.
3. Down the other side on the cogwheel railway to **Vitznau**.
4. A **lake boat** from Vitznau to Lucerne, about an hour.

The whole circuit is covered by the Swiss Travel Pass. Ship your large bags from Zurich to Lucerne with the SBB luggage service, and arrive at your hotel by boat.

## Tickets, passes and booking windows

- **Where to book:** sbb.ch or the SBB Mobile app. Full-fare tickets cost the same whenever you buy them and are valid on any train that day.
- **Supersaver tickets** are cheaper but tied to one train; buy them as soon as your plans are fixed.
- **Swiss Travel Pass:** covers the train, the Rigi and the lake boats. In 2026 the 3-day pass costs CHF 254 (about $315) in second class. Our [Swiss Travel Pass calculator](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/tools/swiss-travel-pass-calculator) compares it with single tickets for your actual route.
- **First class:** on such a short trip, we book it mainly for travelers arriving with a lot of luggage, or at commuter hours, when second class is crowded.

## Stops worth making on the way

- **Zug:** a small old town on its own lake, known for Zuger Kirschtorte, a cherry-brandy cake.
- **Arth-Goldau:** the base of the Rigi railway, as described above.
- **Swiss Museum of Transport:** just outside central Lucerne, by lake boat or local train. A good first afternoon with children.

## Accessibility on the Zurich to Lucerne trains

Lucerne is a terminus, so its platforms are level with the station hall, and the lakefront is step-free from the exit. Zürich HB has lifts and ramps to every platform, and the airport station has lifts from the terminal. Double-deck InterRegio trains have a wheelchair area with an accessible toilet. Book help through the SBB Contact Center Handicap at least one hour ahead (0800 007 102 in Switzerland, +41 800 007 102 from abroad, daily 5 a.m. to midnight), and staff will meet you with a ramp. The Rigi detour is less straightforward for wheelchair users, so we design an alternative such as a lake cruise from Lucerne instead.

## How we handle this transfer on a private trip

For travelers flying into Zurich, we usually go straight to Lucerne on arrival day: by train if you travel light, by private driver if you bring two suitcases each. Lucerne then becomes the base for two or three nights, with the Rigi, Pilatus and the lake. From there, the Luzern-Interlaken Express to the Jungfrau region is the next leg, described in our [Zurich to Interlaken guide](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/articles/zurich-to-interlaken). ## Frequently asked questions

### How long is the train from Zurich to Lucerne?

The fastest direct trains take 41 minutes from Zürich HB to Luzern, using the Zimmerberg base tunnel. Other direct trains take about 50 to 60 minutes. From Zurich Airport the trip takes about an hour and five minutes, usually with a change at Zürich HB.

### Do I need to book the Zurich to Lucerne train in advance?

No. A full-fare ticket costs the same on the day and is valid on any train that day, with no seat reservation. Booking ahead only helps if you want a Supersaver ticket, which is cheaper but tied to one train. With a Swiss Travel Pass you simply board.

### Is Lucerne worth a day trip from Zurich?

Yes, and it is easy with trains every half hour. In one day you can walk the old town and the Chapel Bridge and take a lake cruise. The mountains, Rigi or Pilatus, need more time, so we recommend at least two nights in Lucerne if your schedule allows.

### Is the Swiss Travel Pass worth it for Zurich to Lucerne?

Not for this trip alone, since the single fare is about CHF 27. The pass pays off when you add longer journeys and excursions: the Rigi and the lake boats are fully included, and Pilatus is discounted. Use our Swiss Travel Pass calculator with your whole route to see the difference.
