# Neuschwanstein Day Trip from Munich: Train, Tickets and Tips

Neuschwanstein day trip from Munich: train vs private driver, timed tickets, Hohenschwangau, Marienbrücke and the best timing, from our Germany designer.

A Neuschwanstein day trip from Munich is on almost every Bavaria wish list, and for good reason. King Ludwig II's castle on its rock above the Pöllat gorge, with the Alps behind it, looks exactly like the pictures. It is also one of the most visited sights in Germany, with timed tickets, a steep walk and a two-hour journey each way. We plan this day for our travelers every week, and this is how to do it well.

## The short version

- **Book your castle ticket online** weeks ahead in summer. Timed entry, guided tour only.
- **Choose train or driver.** The train is cheap and easy. A private driver saves time and lets you add Linderhof or the Wieskirche.
- **Allow the full day.** About two hours each way, plus three to four hours on site.
- **Plan the uphill walk.** The castle is 30 to 40 minutes on foot above the village of Hohenschwangau.
- **See Marienbrücke** for the classic view, if it is open.

## Getting there by train

Regional trains run from Munich main station to **Füssen** in about two hours, some direct and some with a change in Buchloe or Kaufbeuren. From Füssen station, a local bus takes about ten minutes to **Hohenschwangau**, the village below the castles, where the ticket center is.

The best ticket for this trip is the **Bavaria day ticket** for regional trains, valid for up to five people traveling together, and including the local bus. For two or more people it is much cheaper than single tickets. Note that on weekdays it is valid from 9 am, which means you take a train leaving just after 9 am rather than at dawn. If you hold a Deutschlandticket, the monthly German transit pass, it also covers this route.

What the train does well: low cost, no driving, and a pretty ride through the Allgäu foothills. Its limits: the trains get crowded on summer weekends, the connection times leave less slack for your tour slot, and you see only Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau.

**Sample train day:**

- Around 9 am: train from Munich.
- Around 11 am: arrive in Füssen, bus to Hohenschwangau.
- Around 11:30 am: walk up to the castle.
- 12:30 or 1 pm: guided tour of Neuschwanstein.
- Afternoon: Marienbrücke, lunch, Hohenschwangau or the Alpsee.
- Around 5 pm: bus and train back, in Munich for dinner.

## Getting there with a private driver

By road, Neuschwanstein is also about two hours from Munich, depending on traffic. With a driver, you leave when you want, you can take an early tour slot before the crowds, and you can add one or two other stops:

- **Linderhof Palace:** Ludwig's smaller palace in a quiet valley, the only one he saw completed and the one where he spent the most time. Its gardens and grotto are wonderful.
- **The Wieskirche:** a rococo pilgrimage church in the meadows, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with one of the most beautiful interiors in Bavaria.
- **Oberammergau:** a village of painted houses, famous for its Passion Play.

We recommend a driver for families, for groups of three or more, for travelers with limited mobility, and in winter, when the roads and timings are less predictable. Our [Germany road trip in 7 days](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/packages/germany-7-day-roadtrip-from-the-rhine-valley-to-bavaria) includes Neuschwanstein with skip-the-line entry as part of the Bavaria section.

## Tickets: how they work

Neuschwanstein can only be visited on a **guided tour**, about 30 to 35 minutes, with a fixed time on your ticket. Tickets cost about €20 per adult in 2025, plus a booking fee online.

- **Book online** on the official ticket center website. In July, August and on holiday weekends, slots sell out weeks in advance.
- **Some tickets are sold on the day** at the ticket center in Hohenschwangau, but they can sell out by mid-morning in summer. We never rely on them.
- **Your tour time is strict.** If you miss it, you lose the visit. Allow at least 90 minutes between arriving in Hohenschwangau and your tour slot.
- **Combination tickets** with Hohenschwangau Castle are available, with the two tours timed to give you enough time to walk between them.

Photos are not allowed inside the castle. The tour includes many stairs.

## Hohenschwangau Castle

Below Neuschwanstein, on the other side of the village, stands **Hohenschwangau**, a yellow neo-Gothic castle built by Ludwig's father, King Maximilian II. Ludwig spent much of his childhood here, and from its windows he could watch his own castle being built on the opposite hill.

Many visitors skip it, which is a mistake. The rooms are furnished as the royal family lived in them, and the tour gives you the background that makes Neuschwanstein make sense. If you have the time, do both, with Hohenschwangau first. Next to it, by the Alpsee lake, the Museum of the Bavarian Kings tells the story of the Wittelsbach dynasty.

## Marienbrücke: the classic view

The famous photograph of Neuschwanstein, white towers above the forest with the plains behind, is taken from the **Marienbrücke** (Mary's Bridge), an iron footbridge over the Pöllat gorge.

- It is about 15 to 20 minutes on foot from the castle, uphill.
- A shuttle bus from the village drops you nearby, saving most of the climb.
- The bridge is closed in winter when snow and ice make it unsafe, and occasionally for maintenance.
- In summer it gets very crowded. Go early or late in the day.

If the bridge is closed, the walk to the viewpoints around the castle and the path along the Alpsee still give you beautiful angles.

## Walking up, and the alternatives

From Hohenschwangau village to Neuschwanstein is about 1.5 km on a steep paved road, 30 to 40 minutes on foot. The alternatives:

- **Horse-drawn carriages** run up most of the way, with a short walk at the end. Lines can be long in summer.
- **The shuttle bus** goes to a stop near Marienbrücke, from where you walk downhill to the castle.

Wear comfortable shoes, and in summer bring water. The climb is easy for most people but takes longer than it looks.

## When to go

Neuschwanstein is open all year except a few holidays. Each season has its trade-offs:

- **May, June and September:** green landscapes, good weather, fewer people than midsummer. Our favorite window.
- **July and August:** the busiest weeks, with tickets selling out and lines on the shuttle.
- **October:** fall colors around the Alpsee and calmer days.
- **Winter:** the castle under snow is magical, with far fewer visitors, but Marienbrücke is usually closed and days are short.

In December, Neuschwanstein pairs well with a Christmas markets trip. Our [Christmas markets planner](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/guides/christmas-markets-2026) has the dates for Munich, Nuremberg and beyond.

## Pacing the day: arrive early or stay in Füssen

Our advice is to treat Neuschwanstein as a day, not a stop. The travelers who are disappointed are the ones who rushed: a late train, a missed tour slot, a crowded bridge at midday. The ones who love it arrive early, take the tour mid-morning, and spend the afternoon by the Alpsee.

If your budget allows, we recommend the driver. Linderhof is our designers' favorite of Ludwig's palaces, more intimate than Neuschwanstein, and the drive through the Ammergau Alps is beautiful. Better still, spend the night in Füssen. Its old town is charming, and you can be at the castle for the first tour of the morning, before the buses from Munich arrive.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I get from Munich to Neuschwanstein by train?

Take a regional train from Munich main station to Füssen, about two hours, sometimes with a change in Buchloe or Kaufbeuren. From Füssen station, a local bus reaches Hohenschwangau in about ten minutes. The Bavaria day ticket covers the train and the bus for up to five people traveling together.

### Do I need to book Neuschwanstein tickets in advance?

Yes, especially from May to October. Visits are by guided tour only, with a fixed time slot, and tickets cost about €20 per adult in 2025 plus a booking fee. Some tickets are sold on the day in Hohenschwangau, but they often sell out by mid-morning in summer.

### Is it worth visiting Hohenschwangau Castle too?

Yes, if you have the time. Ludwig II grew up in this yellow castle built by his father, and its furnished rooms explain much of what you see at Neuschwanstein. A combination ticket times the two tours with enough gap to walk between them. Visit Hohenschwangau first for the story in order.

### Is Marienbrücke open in winter?

Usually not. The bridge over the Pöllat gorge closes when snow and ice make it unsafe, and occasionally for maintenance. In winter you can still enjoy the castle under snow with far fewer visitors, and the paths around the castle and the Alpsee give other fine views.
