The Lyon Festival of Lights (Fête des Lumières) takes place in 2026 from Saturday, December 5 to Tuesday, December 8, according to the city's official site. For four evenings, more than 25 light installations transform the facades, squares and parks of Lyon, and entry is free. December 8 itself is the traditional night, when Lyon residents set candles on their windowsills. Hotels fill months in advance, so book by summer if you can.

Lyon is our home city: our office is in Villefranche-sur-Saône, half an hour north. Here is how the festival works, when to go each evening, where to stay, and how to combine it with Christmas markets and the Beaujolais and Burgundy vineyards.

## Why Lyon lights up on December 8

On December 8, 1852, Lyon was due to inaugurate a gilded statue of the Virgin Mary on top of the chapel on Fourvière hill. Bad weather postponed the ceremony, but when the sky cleared in the evening, residents spontaneously placed candles in their windows and the city lit up. The gesture became a tradition: every December 8, Lyon families still set small candles in colored glasses, the **lumignons**, on their windowsills.

The modern festival grew from that tradition into an international event of light art, with artists projecting onto the cathedral, the town hall, the basilica and the riverbanks. The two coexist: on the evening of December 8, walk any residential street and you will see the lumignons in the windows.

## What you see, and where

Each edition changes its installations and its route, but the festival is always built around Lyon's great set pieces. In recent editions these have included the facades of **Place des Terreaux** and the town hall, the **Cathédrale Saint-Jean** in Vieux Lyon, the vast **Place Bellecour**, the **Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière** lit up above the city, and installations in the **Parc de la Tête d'Or**. The exact 2026 locations appear on the official map.

Installations range from monumental projections with music, which run on a loop of a few minutes, to smaller, poetic pieces in courtyards and along the Saône quays. You walk from one to the next; the center is largely closed to traffic.

## How to see it without fighting the crowds

The Fête des Lumières draws very large crowds, and the center turns into a one-way pedestrian network with security checks. A few rules make the difference:

- **Start early.** The first hour after the lights come on is the calmest.
- **Favor the weekday evenings.** In 2026 the festival runs Saturday to Tuesday. The weekend nights and December 8 are traditionally the busiest; Monday, December 7 is likely to be more comfortable.
- **Do the hills by day.** Visit Fourvière and Vieux Lyon in daylight, and see the basilica lit up from the Saône quays or the Presqu'île at night, rather than climbing in the crowd.
- **Plan dinner outside the peak.** Book restaurants early in the evening or late, and well ahead. Many bouchons are fully booked weeks in advance for the festival nights.
- **Check public transport.** TCL, the Lyon transport network, adapts its service during the festival and may restrict some central stations at peak times.
- **Dress for standing outside.** December evenings in Lyon are often around freezing, damp and foggy by the rivers.

## Where to stay

Stay within walking distance of the installations, because taxis and cars cannot reach most of the center during the festival. The **Presqu'île**, between the Rhône and the Saône, is the most practical base: flat, central and close to the main sites. **Vieux Lyon** is atmospheric but very crowded in the evening. In our French Christmas itinerary, we use the **InterContinental Lyon Hôtel-Dieu**, the former hospital on the Rhône quays.

Rates rise during the festival and some hotels require minimum stays. We book as early as possible, ideally before the summer, and we hold rooms for our travelers as soon as dates are confirmed.

## Getting there

- **From Paris:** direct TGVs take about 2 hours to Lyon Part-Dieu. Our guide to [Paris to Lyon by train](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/articles/paris-to-lyon-by-train) covers stations and tickets.
- **From the airport:** Lyon Saint-Exupéry is linked to Part-Dieu by the Rhônexpress tram in about 30 minutes.
- **From Switzerland:** Geneva to Lyon takes about 2 hours by train.

## Combining the festival with Christmas markets and wine

**The Lyon Christmas market** on Place Carnot, by Perrache station, runs from November 20 to December 24, 2026, according to the city. Its hours are shortened during the Fête des Lumières.

**The Alsace markets** open on November 27 in Strasbourg and November 23 in Colmar in 2026. Lyon to Strasbourg is about 4 hours by direct train, so a trip can start in Alsace and end in Lyon for the festival weekend. Our guide to the [Alsace Christmas markets](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/articles/alsace-christmas-markets) has the village dates.

**Beaujolais and Burgundy** are on Lyon's doorstep. A day in the Beaujolais crus or on the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune, with tastings in cellars at a steady 54°F, is the perfect contrast to the festival nights. See our [Burgundy wine tour from Lyon](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/articles/burgundy-wine-tour-from-lyon).

**Lyon at Christmas** also means **papillotes**, chocolates wrapped in paper with a printed message, the pink **praline tart**, and **quenelles** in a bouchon. For the rest of the month, our guide to [France in December](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/articles/france-in-december) covers the other regions.

## A three-night Fête des Lumières plan

1. **Saturday, December 5.** Arrive by TGV. Afternoon in Vieux Lyon and the traboules, the covered passageways between the old houses. Early dinner, then the Presqu'île route as the lights come on.
2. **Sunday, December 6.** Fourvière basilica and the Roman theaters in daylight, the Croix-Rousse market in the morning. Evening: Place des Terreaux and the riverbanks.
3. **Monday, December 7.** A day in the Beaujolais or Burgundy with a driver, back for the quieter festival evening, or dinner away from the crowds at a great table outside the city.
4. **Tuesday, December 8.** The traditional night: lumignons in every window. Depart the next morning, or continue to the Alps or Alsace.

## Accessibility during the festival

The Presqu'île is flat and Lyon's trams are low-floor, but the festival crowds make the center very difficult for wheelchair users and anyone unsteady on their feet. The city publishes a dedicated welcome service for visitors with disabilities (Handi-accueil) on the official site from early November, with arrangements updated until the festival ends. Our advice is to stay in a central hotel with step-free access, go out early in the evening, choose two or three installations rather than a full route, and avoid the climb to Fourvière on festival nights.

## Lyon within a French Christmas trip

Our [French Christmas in 7 Days](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/packages/the-magic-of-french-christmas), from EUR 2,099 (about $2,440) per person, combines the Colmar Christmas market and the Alsace wine villages with a night in Lyon at the InterContinental Hôtel-Dieu, the traboules of Old Lyon, pralines, Cerdon wine and dinner at Paul Bocuse's restaurant, then three nights of skiing in Val d'Isère. We time it for the festival on request. If you are deciding whether to give Lyon more nights, read [is Lyon worth visiting](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/articles/is-lyon-worth-visiting), and see our other ideas on the [France page](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/countries/france).

## Frequently asked questions

### When is the Lyon Festival of Lights in 2026?

The Fête des Lumières runs from Saturday, December 5 to Tuesday, December 8, 2026, according to the official site of the City of Lyon. The installations light up in the evening on each of the four nights. December 8 is always included, because it is the traditional date when Lyon residents set candles on their windowsills.

### Is the Lyon Festival of Lights free?

Yes. All the installations are outdoors in public spaces and free to see, with no tickets. What costs more during the festival is the stay: hotel rates rise, some hotels require minimum stays, and popular restaurants are booked weeks ahead. Book your hotel as early as possible, ideally before the summer.

### What is the best night to go to the Fête des Lumières?

The weekend nights and December 8 are traditionally the busiest. In 2026 the festival runs Saturday to Tuesday, so Monday, December 7 is likely to be the most comfortable evening. Whatever the night, go out as the lights come on, see the hills in daylight, and keep December 8 for the lumignons in residential streets.

### How many days do you need for the Lyon Festival of Lights?

Two or three nights are ideal. You need two evenings to see the main installations without rushing, and the daytime for Vieux Lyon, Fourvière and the food. A third day lets you add the Beaujolais or Burgundy vineyards, both close to Lyon, or a dinner away from the crowds.
