Our Swiss trips start from EUR 1,999 per person for seven days (about $2,280) with central 4-star hotels; the 5-star version of the same routes is priced on request, and for that level we budget about **CHF 700 to 1,250 per person per day** (about $870 to $1,550), two people sharing, before international flights. We say it plainly because it matters when you compare offers: our published Swiss itineraries are priced with 4-star hotels, chosen for their position next to the station or the lake. Most of the luxury trips we design in Switzerland start from one of these routes and upgrade the stops that deserve it. Here is what changes, what it costs, and who it suits. ## Luxury in Switzerland is different from France In France, luxury often means a private driver. In Switzerland, it rarely does. The trains are punctual, panoramic and faster than the roads on most mountain routes, and Zermatt is closed to private cars altogether: drivers stop in Täsch, and the last stretch is by shuttle train. Our [Swiss Travel Pass calculator](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/tools/swiss-travel-pass-calculator) checks whether the pass or a Half Fare Card is cheaper for your route; at the luxury level the difference is small, but the pass saves buying tickets at every step. ## Hotels: what a 5-star Swiss stay looks like Switzerland's grand hotels are a category of their own: many date from the late 19th or early 20th century, built for the first waves of Alpine tourism. The Swiss Deluxe Hotels association groups about forty of the country's top 5-star hotels. As examples of the category, not of hotels we have any agreement with: - **Zermatt:** the Riffelalp Resort 2222m, above the village on the Gornergrat railway, with a short tram from the station in summer; or a Matterhorn-facing room in the village itself. - **St. Moritz:** Badrutt's Palace, on the lake, open for a winter and a summer season. - **Lake Lucerne:** the Bürgenstock Resort, on a ridge above the lake, about 40 minutes from Lucerne station by boat and funicular; or a lakefront grand hotel in the city. - **Lake Geneva:** the Fairmont Le Montreux Palace, or the Beau-Rivage Palace in Lausanne. - **Bernese Oberland:** the Victoria-Jungfrau in Interlaken. Grindelwald, Wengen and Mürren are wonderful, but their best hotels are mostly 4-star, so for the full 5-star level we use Interlaken or Gstaad. - **Zurich:** The Dolder Grand above the city, or the Baur au Lac by the lake. Two things we always check. First, seasonality: the grand hotels of St. Moritz and Gstaad close between seasons, typically in spring and late autumn, and some mountain hotels follow the lifts. Second, the room itself: in Zermatt and on the lakes, the view side can cost noticeably more than the other side of the same corridor, and it is the reason you came. ## The trains: Excellence Class, Prestige seats and first class **Glacier Express Excellence Class** is the top seat in Swiss rail. A mandatory reservation of CHF 590 per person (about $730) is added to a first-class ticket or pass. It buys a guaranteed window seat in a lounge car for about twenty guests, a concierge, a seasonal five-course menu with wine served through the journey, access to the Glacier Bar, and luggage carried to and from the platform. It runs only between Zermatt and St. Moritz, in either direction, so a trip that ends the Glacier Express day in Chur has to be rerouted to St. Moritz for Excellence. For a honeymoon or a milestone trip, yes: it turns an eight-hour journey into a long lunch with the Alps outside. For travelers who mainly want to watch the scenery, first class already has the same panoramic windows, and the money can go into a better room in Zermatt. On the **GoldenPass Express** between Montreux and Interlaken, about 3 hours 15 minutes, **Prestige** seats are heated leather seats in a section raised 40 centimeters for a higher view, for a supplement of CHF 49 including the reservation. The **Bernina Express** from Chur or St. Moritz to Tirano has no premium class above first, and first class is what we book. ## Helicopters, guides and private transfers - **Helicopter flights.** Air Zermatt flies sightseeing tours from the heliport in Zermatt, from short flights around the Matterhorn to longer ones over the Aletsch Glacier and the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Private flights are priced per helicopter, not per seat, and depend entirely on the weather, so we place them on a day with a fallback. - **Mountain guides.** A certified mountain guide for a glacier walk or a high trail is the one private service we recommend most in the Alps. It is safer, and it gets you away from the viewing platforms. - **City guides and tastings.** A private walk in Lucerne or Bern on arrival, a winemaker in the Lavaux terraces, a cheese or chocolate maker in Appenzell or Gruyères. - **Private drivers.** We use them where they beat the train: from Zurich or Geneva airport with heavy luggage, between Tirano and Lake Como after the Bernina Express, and for travelers with reduced mobility. As an order of magnitude, our 8-day luxury budget for Lucerne, Zermatt, the Glacier Express in Excellence Class and St. Moritz comes to about CHF 5,700 to 10,300 per person, before flights, with hotels the largest line. A 5-star such as the Victoria-Jungfrau. 2. **Montreux, 1 night.** GoldenPass Express in Prestige seats through Gstaad. A palace on the lake. 3. **Zermatt, 1 night.** The Gornergrat railway to 3,089 meters facing the Matterhorn, and a Matterhorn-view room, or the Riffelalp. With a second night, a helicopter flight. 4. **St. Moritz, 1 night.** The Glacier Express in Excellence Class over the Oberalp Pass. 5. **Lugano, 1 night.** The Bernina Express to Tirano, then the road along Lake Como to Lugano. 6. **Lucerne, 1 night.** In season, the Gotthard Panorama Express and a boat across Lake Lucerne; otherwise a direct train through the Gotthard base tunnel. A lakefront hotel or the Bürgenstock to finish. At the luxury level, we usually stretch this to nine or ten days, with two nights in Zermatt and Lucerne: one-night stays and 5-star prices do not go well together. Lucerne and Mount Pilatus by boat and cogwheel train; two nights in Grindelwald with fondue and a free day for the Jungfraujoch or Lake Brienz; Zermatt with a sunset over the Matterhorn from Sunnegga and the Gornergrat gastronomic route, an aperitif at 3,100 meters and a three-course lunch at the Riffelhaus; then Montreux, the Château de Chillon and a sunset wine tour in the Lavaux terraces. ### 7 days from the Italian lakes into Switzerland Our Italy and Switzerland trip runs from Milan to Zurich: a private boat to Isola Bella and Isola Madre on Lake Maggiore, a lunch in a grotto above Lugano, a cheese and chocolate day in Appenzell or Bern, and four hours at the Bürgenstock spa above Lake Lucerne. For the luxury version, we turn the spa day into a night at the resort. ## Who a luxury Swiss tour suits, and who it does not It suits: - **Rail lovers** who want the best seat on the best trains, and nothing to carry. - **Honeymoons and anniversaries,** with a view room in Zermatt and a long lunch on the Glacier Express. - **Travelers over 60** or anyone who would rather not handle luggage on and off trains five times in a week. - **Winter travelers,** for St. Moritz or Zermatt in the ski season, when the grand hotels are at their liveliest. It does not suit: - **Travelers who want a car and driver every day.** In Switzerland, that is often slower than the train, and impossible in Zermatt. - **Short trips with many stops.** Excellence Class and 5-star hotels on three one-night stays mean paying a lot for a lot of packing. - **Anyone expecting a guaranteed view.** Luxury does not buy a clear Matterhorn. We build a flexible day into every mountain stay and check the webcams with you the evening before. - **Budget-conscious first-timers.** The mountains look the same from a well-placed 4-star hotel. Our standard routes already include the main trains and summits. ## When to go June to September gives open passes, running lake boats and the high trails. December to March is the season for skiing and a snow-covered Glacier Express, and the grand hotels of St. Moritz and Gstaad are open. Avoid November and the weeks between late April and May if hotels matter to you: many mountain hotels and lifts close between seasons, and the Glacier Express pauses each autumn for several weeks. ## Accessibility at the luxury level Swiss trains are among the most accessible in Europe, and SBB boarding assistance is free when booked through its Contact Center Handicap. Recent 5-star hotels usually have step-free rooms with roll-in showers, but historic grand hotels vary, so we check each room before confirming. Door-to-door luggage forwarding and private transfers where a station is not step-free remove most of the remaining difficulties.
