When can you see lavender in Provence? The season runs from **mid-June to late July**, and the safest window for full bloom is **the last week of June to mid-July**. Low areas bloom first: the Luberon around Sénanque Abbey and the Valensole plateau peak around late June and early July. The high Pays de Sault blooms later, usually from early July with color into early August. Dates move by a week or more from one year to the next, depending on spring rain and early summer heat, so treat every date below as typical, not guaranteed.

The other date that matters is the harvest. Once a field is cut, it is bare stubble for the rest of the summer, and on the Valensole plateau the cutting usually starts in the first half of July. If you can choose only one week, choose the first week of July.

## Lavender bloom by area

| Area | Altitude | Typical bloom | Usual peak | Harvest begins |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Luberon and Sénanque Abbey (Gordes) | low | mid-June to mid-July | late June to early July | early to mid-July |
| Valensole plateau | about 500 to 600 m | mid-June to mid-July | last week of June, first week of July | first half of July, much cut by about July 20 |
| Drôme provençale (Grignan, Nyons) | low to medium | mid-June to mid-July | early July | July |
| Pays de Sault and Plateau d'Albion | about 750 to 1,000 m | early July to early August | mid to late July | late July into August |
| Haute-Provence (Forcalquier, Montagne de Lure, Digne) | medium to high | late June to late July | July | late July |

Lavender grows from stems rising in May to flower spikes in June, then turns from pale to deep violet over two to three weeks. A hot, dry spell brings the harvest forward by several days; a stormy June can push it back. Local tourist offices and the Routes de la Lavande association publish bloom updates each season, and we check with farmers and hotels in the area the week before our travelers arrive.

## Lavender or lavandin: what you are looking at

Not every purple field is lavender. Two plants are grown in Provence:

- **True lavender** (lavande fine) grows mainly above about 800 meters, on the Pays de Sault, the Plateau d'Albion and the high valleys. Its bushes are smaller and more rounded, its scent is softer, and its essential oil from Haute-Provence has its own protected designation.
- **Lavandin**, a hybrid, is larger, more productive and grows lower down. Most of the long, straight rows on the Valensole plateau are lavandin, which is why they look so dense in photographs.

Both are beautiful. The difference matters for timing: lavandin on the lower plateaus flowers and is harvested earlier than true lavender on the heights.

## Valensole: the classic rows

The Valensole plateau, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, is the image most people have in mind: endless purple rows, sometimes alternating with golden wheat and sunflowers, with the Alps on the horizon. The roads around Valensole, Puimoisson and Riez cross the best fields.

- **When:** peak usually from the last week of June to the first week of July.
- **What else:** Moustiers-Sainte-Marie and the Gorges du Verdon are about thirty minutes away, so this is the area to combine lavender with lakes and canyons.
- **Festival:** Valensole holds its Fête de la Lavande on the third Sunday of July (it was July 19 in 2026), with a market, distillation demonstrations and folk shows. Some fields are already cut by then.
- **From:** about an hour from Aix-en-Provence, about an hour and fifteen minutes from Marseille airport, about two hours from Nice, which makes it a long but possible outing among our [day trips from Nice](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/articles/day-trips-from-nice).

## Sénanque Abbey and the Luberon

The Abbey of Notre-Dame de Sénanque, a 12th-century Cistercian monastery in a narrow valley a few minutes below Gordes, has the most photographed lavender field in France in front of its church. It is a working monastery: monks still live there by the Rule of Saint Benedict.

What to know before you go:

- **Bloom:** usually late June to mid-July. The field is small and is harvested by the community once it has flowered.
- **Visiting the abbey:** guided tours, in French, are booked online in advance and places are limited. Non-French speakers can visit with a tablet guide. Visitors are asked to keep silence, and filming and sound recording are not allowed during services.
- **The field:** you can see it from the access road and the abbey grounds; stay on the paths.
- **Best light:** early morning, before the tour coaches.

Around it, the Luberon has smaller lavender fields mixed with vineyards and villages: Gordes, Roussillon with its ochre cliffs, Ménerbes, Bonnieux and Lourmarin. The Musée de la Lavande at Coustellet explains distillation and the difference between lavender and lavandin.

## Sault and the Plateau d'Albion: the late bloom

The village of Sault stands above a high plateau between Mont Ventoux and the Plateau d'Albion. This is true lavender country, and it flowers last.

- **When:** early July to early August, usually best in mid to late July.
- **Why go:** if your trip is in the second half of July, this is where the color still is. The fields are fewer but wilder, against the bulk of Mont Ventoux.
- **The drive:** the road through the Gorges de la Nesque from Monieux, and the high roads toward Ferrassières, are among the most scenic in Provence.
- **Festival:** the Fête de la Lavande in Sault takes place every August 15, with a market, a country lunch and the French championship of lavender cutting by scythe.
- **From:** about an hour and a quarter from Avignon.

## Drôme provençale: the quieter alternative

North of the Vaucluse, around Grignan, Nyons and Valréas, the Drôme provençale has lavender and lavandin fields with fewer visitors, olive groves, truffle oaks and the château of Grignan. The lower fields bloom from mid-June, the higher Baronnies from early July. It suits travelers coming south from Lyon.

## A three-day lavender route we often design

| Day | Route |
| --- | --- |
| 1 | Morning at Sénanque, Gordes and Roussillon. Night in the Luberon. |
| 2 | Drive east to the Valensole plateau for late afternoon light. Night in Moustiers-Sainte-Marie or near Valensole. |
| 3 | Sunrise in the fields, then the Gorges du Verdon and Lake Sainte-Croix. Continue to the Riviera or back to Aix. |

In the second half of July, we swap day 2 for Sault and the Plateau d'Albion. Lavender fits naturally into a longer trip: our [Luxury France Honeymoon in 14 Days](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/packages/luxury-honeymoon-trip-from-paris-to-provence) ends in Provence, and many of our [10-day France itineraries](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/countries/france/10-days) can be timed for the bloom. If you are deciding between the countryside and the coast, read [Provence vs the French Riviera](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/articles/provence-vs-french-riviera).

## How to visit lavender fields respectfully

- **The fields are farms.** They are private property and a crop. Stay on the edge, do not walk between the rows and do not pick.
- **Some farms charge for photo access** or ask you to use their own paths. Pay or move on.
- **Bees work every flower.** They are calm, but watch children and anyone with an allergy.
- **Park safely.** Do not block farm tracks or stop on the narrow roads; tractors use them during harvest.
- **Go early or late.** The light is softer, the fields are quieter, and the afternoon heat in July is often above 90°F.
- **Buy from producers.** Distilleries and farm shops sell essential oil, honey and sachets; it is the best way to thank the people whose fields you photograph.

## Viewing lavender with reduced mobility

Many fields on the Valensole plateau and around Sault can be seen from roadside lay-bys without leaving paved ground, which suits travelers using a wheelchair. Field edges and farm tracks are uneven and stony. Sénanque's access road and shop are manageable, but the abbey interior includes stairs, and the perched villages of the Luberon are steep and cobbled. We plan viewpoints, farms and distilleries with level access for travelers who need them.

## If you cannot come in June or July

Outside the bloom, lavender country is still worth visiting: distilleries and museums are open, and the fields are green in spring. But if purple rows are the reason for the trip, our [best time to visit France](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/articles/best-time-to-visit-france) guide and our [best time to visit tool](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/tools/best-time-to-visit) help you weigh the bloom against crowds and heat.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the best week to see lavender in Provence?

The first week of July is the safest single week. The Valensole plateau and the Luberon around Sénanque are usually at or near peak bloom, and the harvest has rarely started. In a hot year, the last week of June can be better. If you travel later in July, head to the higher Pays de Sault, which blooms last.

### Is the lavender still in bloom in August?

Mostly no. By early August, the Valensole plateau and the Luberon are harvested. The high Pays de Sault and Plateau d'Albion may still show color in the first days of August, depending on the year, and Sault holds its lavender festival on August 15. If lavender is the goal, aim for late June to mid-July.

### Can you walk into the lavender fields?

Not into the rows. The fields are private farms and a commercial crop, so stay on the edges and roadside spots, do not pick the flowers, and do not block farm tracks. Some farms welcome visitors on marked paths or charge a small fee for photographs. Buying oil or honey from the producer is a good way to say thank you.

### Where is the best lavender in Provence?

For the classic long rows, the Valensole plateau. For the iconic image with an abbey, Sénanque near Gordes in the Luberon. For true lavender and a later bloom, the Pays de Sault below Mont Ventoux. The Drôme provençale around Grignan is the quieter alternative. Many travelers see two of them in a three-day route.
