Jungfraujoch vs Gornergrat vs Schilthorn: cost, travel time, views and altitude compared, plus which summit fits your base and our weather rule for going up.

Jungfraujoch, Gornergrat or Schilthorn: three of the most famous viewpoints in the Swiss Alps, and most travelers have time and budget for one, maybe two. They are not interchangeable. One is a full-day expedition to a glacier, one is a short ride to the best Matterhorn view there is, and one is a cable car to a revolving restaurant facing the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. We book all three every week in season, and this is how we help travelers choose.

## The three at a glance

**Jungfraujoch, 3,454 m (11,332 ft)**

- From Interlaken via Grindelwald and the Eiger Express gondola, then a cogwheel railway inside the Eiger.
- About two hours each way from Interlaken. Plan a full day.
- About CHF 230 to 260 per adult round trip from Interlaken in summer 2025, less in winter.
- Best for: snow and ice in midsummer, the Aletsch Glacier, the "highest railway station in Europe" experience.

**Gornergrat, 3,089 m (10,135 ft)**

- From Zermatt on an open-air rack railway, running since 1898.
- About 33 minutes each way. A half day, including a walk.
- About CHF 100 to 170 round trip in summer 2025, depending on the day and the departure time.
- Best for: the Matterhorn, the Monte Rosa massif and a ring of glaciers and 4,000 m peaks.

**Schilthorn, 2,970 m (9,744 ft)**

- From Stechelberg in the Lauterbrunnen valley by cable car, via Gimmelwald, Mürren and Birg.
- About 30 to 40 minutes each way from the valley floor. A half day, more if you stop in Mürren.
- A little over CHF 100 round trip from Stechelberg in 2025.
- Best for: the classic view of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, the revolving Piz Gloria restaurant, and James Bond fans.

## Jungfraujoch: the Top of Europe

Jungfraujoch is the saddle between the Mönch and the Jungfrau, reached by a railway tunnel through the Eiger built more than a century ago. At the top you find a research station, the Sphinx observation terrace, an ice palace carved into the glacier and a snow plateau where you can walk in July.

The view on the south side is the Aletsch Glacier, the longest in the Alps, flowing away in a great river of ice. That is what makes Jungfraujoch unique: you are not looking at the glacier from far away, you are standing on top of it.

What to know:

- **It is the most expensive and the busiest.** In July and August, trains fill, and seat reservations are needed on the upper section.
- **The altitude is real.** At 3,454 m, some people feel short of breath or get a headache. Move slowly, drink water and do not plan it on your first day in the Alps.
- **The Eiger Express** gondola from Grindelwald has shortened the trip. Many of our travelers go up that way and come down via Kleine Scheidegg, Wengen and Lauterbrunnen to see a different valley.
- **With the Swiss Travel Pass**, the train to Grindelwald or Wengen is covered and the rest is about 25 percent off.

## Gornergrat: the Matterhorn view

The Gornergrat railway climbs from Zermatt through larch forests and alpine meadows to a ridge facing the Matterhorn. At the top you see 29 peaks over 4,000 m, including the Dufourspitze, the highest summit in Switzerland, and the Gorner Glacier spreading below.

It is the best-value high-altitude excursion in Switzerland, and the most flexible. The ride is short, trains run often, and you can easily fit it into a morning.

What to know:

- **Take the first trains.** The Matterhorn is usually clearest early, before clouds build in the afternoon.
- **Walk part of the way down.** Get off at Rotenboden on the way down and walk a few minutes to the Riffelsee, a small lake where the Matterhorn reflects on calm mornings, then follow the trail to Riffelberg, about 45 minutes more, and catch the train there.
- **Pricing is dynamic.** Early booking and less popular departures cost less.
- **With the Swiss Travel Pass**, the Gornergrat is 50 percent off.

The Gornergrat runs year round, and in winter it carries skiers as well as sightseers.

## Schilthorn: Piz Gloria and the Bernese trio

The Schilthorn rises above the car-free village of Mürren, on a cliff high over the Lauterbrunnen valley. At the top is Piz Gloria, a revolving restaurant that featured in the 1969 James Bond film *On Her Majesty's Secret Service*, with a small Bond exhibition below.

The view is the reason to go: the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau seen from across the valley, side by side, with more than 200 peaks on a clear day. From Jungfraujoch you are in the middle of the range; from the Schilthorn you see it in full.

What to know:

- **The journey is half the fun.** Cable cars climb in stages, and at Birg you can walk the Thrill Walk, a steel path with glass floors bolted to the cliff.
- **Combine it with Mürren and Gimmelwald**, two of the most charming villages in the Bernese Oberland, both car-free.
- **With the Swiss Travel Pass**, the trip to Mürren is covered and the rest is 50 percent off.

## Which one should you choose?

The easiest rule is to choose by your base.

- **Staying in Zermatt:** the Gornergrat, no question. It is the reason most people go to Zermatt.
- **Staying in Interlaken, Grindelwald or Wengen:** Jungfraujoch if you want snow and the glacier, especially on a first trip to the Alps. The Schilthorn if you prefer the view of the three peaks, a lower price and a shorter day.
- **Staying in Lauterbrunnen or Mürren:** the Schilthorn, which starts on your doorstep.

By traveler:

- **First-timers with a big budget:** Jungfraujoch in the Bernese Oberland, then the Gornergrat in Zermatt.
- **Families with young children:** the Gornergrat or the Schilthorn. Shorter rides and lower altitude are easier on small travelers.
- **Photographers:** the Gornergrat at sunrise, and the Schilthorn for the Bernese trio.
- **Travelers sensitive to altitude:** start with the Schilthorn, the lowest of the three.

If you have a week, two of them fit easily: one in the Bernese Oberland and the Gornergrat in Zermatt.

## The weather rule

This is the most important part of the article. **Do not go up in cloud.** On a cloudy day, all three summits look the same: white. You pay full price to stand in fog.

How we plan around it:

- **Check the summit webcams at breakfast.** If the top is in cloud, swap with a lake day or a valley walk.
- **Stay at least two nights in each base**, so you have a backup morning.
- **Go early.** Clear mornings often cloud over by early afternoon, especially in July and August.
- **Avoid fixed, non-refundable tickets** for a specific day unless you have a backup.

Our [best time to visit Switzerland](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/articles/best-time-to-visit-switzerland) explains which months give the clearest views. In short: September is the most reliable.

## Our designers' take

If our designers could only choose one, it would be the Gornergrat at the first train of the day, with the walk down to the Riffelsee. It is short, the view is perfect, and you are back in Zermatt for a late breakfast.

That said, Jungfraujoch is the one most of our travelers talk about afterwards. Standing on the edge of the Aletsch Glacier in July, with snow under your boots, is something you cannot get anywhere else. If it is your first trip and the weather is clear, go, and come down by Wengen to see the Lauterbrunnen valley from above.

The Schilthorn is our favorite for travelers who want the view without the crowds. Stop in Mürren for lunch on the way down: it is one of the most beautiful villages in Switzerland.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Jungfraujoch worth the price?

On a clear day and on a first trip to the Alps, yes. Standing on the edge of the Aletsch Glacier with snow underfoot in July is unique. At about CHF 230 to 260 round trip from Interlaken in summer 2025, it is the most expensive of the three, so only go up when the summit webcams show clear skies.

### Which is better, Gornergrat or Jungfraujoch?

They do different things. The Gornergrat is a short half-day ride from Zermatt to the best Matterhorn view, at a lower price. Jungfraujoch is a full-day trip to a glacier at 3,454 m. Choose by your base: Gornergrat in Zermatt, Jungfraujoch in Interlaken, Grindelwald or Wengen. With a week, you can do both.

### Is the Schilthorn worth it?

Yes, especially if you stay in Lauterbrunnen or Mürren, or want the view of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau side by side at a lower price than Jungfraujoch. The cable car ride, the Thrill Walk at Birg and a lunch stop in car-free Mürren make it a memorable half day.

### What should I do if it is cloudy?

Do not go up. On a cloudy day, all three summits show only fog, and you pay full price for nothing. Check the summit webcams at breakfast, swap with a lake or valley day, and stay at least two nights in each base so you have a backup morning.
