# Is Lyon Worth Visiting? A Local Guide to France's Food Capital

Is Lyon worth visiting? Yes, for food, Vieux Lyon and the Beaujolais. Our team, based near Lyon, shares neighborhoods, bouchons, traboules and how many days.

Is Lyon worth visiting? Yes, and we would say so even if our offices were not half an hour up the road in Villefranche-sur-Saône. Lyon is France's food capital, a UNESCO-listed city with two thousand years of history layered on two hills and two rivers, and it is only two hours from Paris by TGV. Give it **two full days at minimum, three if you add a day in the Beaujolais vineyards**.

Lyon is not a postcard city like Paris, and it does not try to be. It rewards travelers who like to eat well, walk a lot and discover a place that the French themselves love. Here is how we show it to our travelers.

## Who Lyon is for, and who should skip it

**Go if you:**

-   plan your days around lunch and dinner;
-   like old neighborhoods, covered passages and markets more than queues for monuments;
-   are traveling between Paris and Provence, the Alps or Switzerland and want a stop that is more than a night's sleep;
- want to see wine country (Beaujolais, the northern Rhône, Burgundy) from a city base.

**Skip it, or keep it to one night, if you:**

-   want famous monuments on every corner;
-   have only a week in France and have not yet seen Paris and one rural region;
- do not care much about food. That is most of the point.

## The neighborhoods that make Lyon

### Vieux Lyon

The Renaissance quarter at the foot of Fourvière hill, on the west bank of the Saône, is one of the largest Renaissance districts in Europe. It splits into three parishes: Saint-Paul to the north, Saint-Jean around the cathedral, and Saint-Georges to the south. The pastel facades hide courtyards, spiral staircases and the traboules described below. Go early in the morning or in the evening; the main street, rue Saint-Jean, is crowded at midday.

### Fourvière

The funicular from Vieux Lyon station climbs to the white basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, with the best view of the city, and to the Roman theatres of Lugdunum, founded in 43 BC. Next to the theatres, the Lugdunum museum displays the city's Roman past. In June and July, the Nuits de Fourvière festival stages concerts in the ancient theatre.

### The Presqu'île

The peninsula between the Rhône and the Saône is the city center: Place Bellecour, the shopping streets, the Opéra and Place des Terreaux with the City Hall and the Musée des Beaux-Arts. It is flat and easy to walk, and where we place most of our travelers.

### Croix-Rousse

The hill of the silk workers, the canuts, rises above the Terreaux. Its slopes are full of steep stairs, tall workshops built for Jacquard looms, and traboules such as the Cour des Voraces. On top, the plateau feels like a village, with a morning market along the Boulevard de la Croix-Rousse and the trompe-l'oeil Mur des Canuts.

### Confluence and the 6th

At the southern tip of the Presqu'île, the Confluence district is modern architecture and the Musée des Confluences. Across the Rhône, the elegant 6th arrondissement leads to the Parc de la Tête d'Or, one of the largest city parks in France, with a lake and botanical gardens.

## Bouchons: how to eat like a Lyonnais

A bouchon is a small, convivial restaurant serving the city's traditional dishes: checked tablecloths, shared tables, wine served in a "pot" (a thick-bottomed 46 cl bottle) and a menu that does not apologize for its pork.

The dishes to try:

-   **Quenelle de brochet** in Nantua (crayfish) sauce, a soft pike dumpling;
-   **Saucisson brioché** and **pâté en croûte**;
-   **Tablier de sapeur**, breaded and fried tripe, better than it sounds;
-   **Salade lyonnaise** with lardons, croutons and a poached egg;
-   **Cervelle de canut**, fresh cheese with herbs and shallots, despite its name ("silk worker's brain");
- **Tarte aux pralines**, bright pink and very sweet.

Plenty of restaurants call themselves bouchons. Two labels help you find the real ones. The **Les Bouchons Lyonnais** association, created in 2012 with the city's chamber of commerce, awards its label after an independent audit of the cooking, products and setting; in 2026 it lists 22 restaurants, including the three Daniel & Denise addresses, Le Bouchon des Cordeliers, Les Fines Gueules in Vieux Lyon, Le Poêlon d'Or, Le Café du Jura and Le Bouchon Sully. A separate, older certification, the Authentiques Bouchons Lyonnais, is shown by a sticker of Gnafron, the wine-loving puppet of Lyon's Guignol theatre. We book bouchons for lunch more often than dinner: the set menus are better value and the atmosphere is at its liveliest.

For ingredients, go to **Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse**, the covered market with about fifty-five merchants: Saint-Marcellin cheese from the Mère Richard stall, oysters at the counter, sausages, pralines. Most stalls are open from Tuesday to Sunday morning.

## Traboules: the passages through the city

A traboule is a covered passage that crosses a building from one street to the next, through courtyards and stairwells. Lyon has about five hundred, around two hundred in Vieux Lyon, one hundred and sixty on the Croix-Rousse slopes and one hundred and thirty on the Presqu'île. About fifty are open to the public under an agreement with the city, generally from 7 am to 7 pm.

Look for the bronze plaques in Vieux Lyon and the lion-head plaques on the Croix-Rousse. Two to start with: the Longue Traboule off rue Saint-Jean, which crosses four buildings, and the Cour des Voraces on the Croix-Rousse slopes, with its six-floor open staircase. People live in these buildings, so walk in quietly and do not linger in stairwells. A guide doubles what you see, because many of the best passages are unmarked.

## Museums worth your time

- **Musée des Beaux-Arts:** in a former abbey on Place des Terreaux, one of the finest art collections in France outside Paris, from Egyptian antiquities to Monet and Picasso, with a quiet cloister garden.
- **Musée des Confluences:** natural history and world cultures in a steel-and-glass building at the meeting of the rivers. Good with children.
- **Lugdunum:** the Roman museum built into Fourvière hill, beside the theatres.
- **Institut Lumière:** in the Lumière family villa in Monplaisir, where the brothers shot one of the first films in 1895.
- **Musée Gadagne:** the history of Lyon and its puppets, in a Renaissance mansion in Vieux Lyon.
- **Centre d'Histoire de la Résistance et de la Déportation:** Lyon was a capital of the French Resistance; this museum tells that story where the Gestapo once operated.

The Musée des Tissus, the textile museum, is closed for a long renovation. It reopened temporarily from September 19 to December 13, 2026 for the Lyon Biennale; check before you plan around it.

## The Fête des Lumières in December

Every year around December 8, Lyon lights up. The tradition dates to 1852, when residents placed candles in their windows to celebrate the statue of the Virgin on Fourvière. Today it is a four-night festival of light installations on facades, squares and parks. **In 2026, it runs from Saturday December 5 to Tuesday December 8.** It is free, very crowded, and hotels fill months ahead. We have a full guide to the [Lyon Festival of Lights](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/articles/lyon-festival-of-lights), and our [French Christmas in 7 Days](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/packages/the-magic-of-french-christmas) combines Lyon with the Alsace markets and the Alps, from €2,099 (about $2,400) per person.

## The Beaujolais: our home vineyards

Thirty minutes north of Lyon begins the Beaujolais, where our team lives and works. It is worth a full day, and it changes how you see Lyon.

- **The Pierres Dorées:** in the south, villages built of golden limestone, such as Oingt, listed among the most beautiful villages of France, Theizé and Châtillon-d'Azergues. Gentle hills, small castles, and the place to taste Beaujolais blanc and rosé.
- **The ten crus:** in the north, on granite slopes, the ten cru villages, from Brouilly and Côte de Brouilly to Morgon, Fleurie, Moulin-à-Vent, Chiroubles, Régnié, Chénas, Juliénas and Saint-Amour. These are serious Gamay wines, far from the image of Beaujolais Nouveau.
- **Villefranche-sur-Saône:** the economic capital of the Beaujolais (Beaujeu is the historic one), with a long main street of Renaissance courtyards.

Beaujolais Nouveau is released on the third Thursday of November, which is **November 19 in 2026**, with celebrations in the villages and in Lyon's bouchons the night before.

From Lyon, Burgundy is also within reach. Our guide to a [Burgundy wine tour from Lyon](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/articles/burgundy-wine-tour-from-lyon) explains when to day-trip and when to sleep in Beaune.

## How many days in Lyon

| Days | Plan |
| --- | --- |
| 1 | Vieux Lyon and the traboules in the morning, funicular to Fourvière, bouchon lunch, Presqu'île and the Beaux-Arts in the afternoon |
| 2 | Croix-Rousse market and slopes, Les Halles, Confluences or the Institut Lumière, dinner in the 6th or the Presqu'île |
| 3 | Beaujolais: Pierres Dorées and crus with a winemaker lunch, or Pérouges and the Dombes |

Lyon is about two hours from Paris by TGV, about an hour from Avignon and about two hours from Geneva, which makes it the natural hinge of a France and Switzerland trip. Our guide to [Paris to Lyon by train](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/articles/paris-to-lyon-by-train) covers the connection.

## Getting around with reduced mobility

The Presqu'île is flat, with wide pedestrian streets, and Lyon's trams are low-floor. Vieux Lyon is cobbled, many traboules have steps, and the Croix-Rousse slopes are made of stairs, so we use the funicular for Fourvière and a car to the Croix-Rousse plateau. We check every hotel and restaurant entrance before booking.

Lyon is home ground for us, it anchors many of our [France trips](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/countries/france), and our [food and wine trips](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/trips/food-and-wine) often start here. ## Frequently asked questions

### How many days do you need in Lyon?

Two full days cover Vieux Lyon, Fourvière, the Presqu'île, the Croix-Rousse and a few long meals. Three days let you add a day in the Beaujolais vineyards or the medieval village of Pérouges. One night is enough only if Lyon is a stop between Paris and Provence, and then we focus on Vieux Lyon and a bouchon dinner.

### Is Lyon better than Paris?

It is different. Paris has the monuments and museums of a world capital; Lyon is smaller, calmer and more focused on food, with prices that are often lower. Most of our travelers see Paris first and add Lyon for two or three days on the way south or to the Alps. Food lovers often tell us Lyon was their favorite city.

### What is Lyon famous for?

Lyon is famous for its cooking, from the bouchons to Paul Bocuse, for its Renaissance old town listed by UNESCO, its traboules, its Roman theatres on Fourvière hill and its silk history on the Croix-Rousse. It is also known for the Fête des Lumières in early December and as the gateway to the Beaujolais vineyards.

### Is Lyon worth visiting in winter?

Yes, especially in early December, when the Fête des Lumières fills the city with light installations. Winter is also bouchon season: the hearty dishes make the most sense in the cold. Expect gray, damp days and book hotels well ahead for the festival weekend. January and February are quieter, with lower prices.
