# How Many Days in Paris? 3, 4 and 5-Day Plans from Locals

How many days in Paris is enough? Four for a first visit. Our designers share day-by-day plans for 3, 4 and 5 days, the best day trips, and where to stay.

How many days in Paris is enough? For a first visit, our answer is **four full days**, which usually means five nights once you count the arrival day. Three days covers the essentials at a brisk pace. Five lets you add a day trip and still have time for long lunches, which are half the point of Paris. Below are the plans we actually build for our travelers, day by day.

## How to count your days

Transatlantic flights land in Paris in the morning, and you rarely check in before mid-afternoon. Count your arrival day as a half day for an easy walk and an early dinner, not for the Louvre. The same goes for departure day.

So when we say "four days in Paris," we mean four full days on the ground, with one night on each side. If your trip is a week in France, that leaves room for one region after Paris. Our [7-day France itineraries](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/countries/france/7-days) are built on that split.

## Paris in 3 days: the essentials

Three days works if you are combining Paris with other regions or countries and want the highlights without rushing every hour.

**Day 1: the Left Bank and the Eiffel Tower**

- Morning at the Musée d'Orsay, with its Impressionist collection in a former railway station.
- Walk through Saint-Germain-des-Prés for lunch and a look at the bookshops and cafés.
- Late afternoon at the Eiffel Tower, with a timed ticket booked ahead. Go up close to sunset if the season allows.

**Day 2: the islands and the Louvre**

- Notre-Dame, reopened since December 2024, and Sainte-Chapelle on the Île de la Cité. Go early: Sainte-Chapelle's stained glass is at its best in morning light.
- Walk across to the Marais for lunch around the Place des Vosges.
- Afternoon at the Louvre with a timed entry. Choose two or three wings, not the whole museum.

**Day 3: Versailles**

- The château in the morning, the gardens and Marie-Antoinette's estate in the afternoon. It is a full day.
- Back in Paris for a dinner cruise on the Seine or a quiet evening in your neighborhood.

What three days misses: Montmartre, the smaller museums, any day trip beyond Versailles, and the slow afternoons that make people fall for the city.

## Paris in 4 days: the right length for a first visit

Add a fourth day and the trip changes from a checklist to a stay. Keep days 1 to 3 above, and add:

**Day 4: Montmartre and the Right Bank**

- Morning in Montmartre: the Sacré-Cœur, the village streets behind it, and the vineyard. Arrive before 10 am to beat the crowds.
- Lunch near the Canal Saint-Martin or in South Pigalle.
- Afternoon at the Musée de l'Orangerie for Monet's Water Lilies, then the Tuileries and the Palais-Royal gardens.
- Evening for a special dinner, or a cabaret if that is your style.

Four days also gives you a buffer for weather or a closed museum. That matters, because Paris museums close on different days: the Louvre on Tuesdays, Orsay and Versailles on Mondays.

## Paris in 5 days: add a day trip

With five days, use one for a trip out of the city. The best options, by travel time:

- **Giverny:** Monet's house and garden, about 45 minutes by train to Vernon and a short shuttle, or an hour by car. Open from spring to fall only; the garden is at its best from May to July.
- **Champagne:** Reims is about 45 minutes by TGV. A cathedral, two Champagne houses and a vineyard lunch in Épernay or the villages fits easily in a day.
- **The Loire Valley:** Tours is about an hour by TGV. With a driver, you can see Chenonceau and Amboise and be back for a late dinner.
- **Fontainebleau or Chantilly:** two great châteaux under an hour away, much quieter than Versailles.
- **Disneyland Paris:** about 40 minutes by RER, a full day with children.

What we do not recommend as a day trip: **Mont Saint-Michel** and **the Normandy D-Day beaches**. Both are three to four hours each way. They deserve an overnight in Bayeux or near the bay, as on our [France family trip](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/packages/a-trip-for-the-whole-family-history-of-france-and-disney).

**Traveling with children?** Swap the Orangerie for the Jardin du Luxembourg, with its pony rides and toy sailboats, and the Muséum's Grand Gallery of Evolution in the Jardin des Plantes. Keep museum visits to two hours, plan an afternoon break at the hotel, and save the Eiffel Tower for the evening, when the lights sparkle on the hour.

## Paris in a week or more

Seven days in Paris alone is not too much. Parisians would say it is barely enough. With a week, we add:

- A second day trip, for example Champagne and Giverny.
- A food-focused day: a market morning, a cooking class, a wine tasting in a cellar.
- Smaller museums like the Musée Rodin, the Musée Jacquemart-André or the Picasso museum in the Marais.
- A neighborhood day in Belleville, the Batignolles or the Latin Quarter, with no fixed plan.

Our [Accessible Paris in 7 Days](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/packages/7-days-in-paris-accessible-trip) is a good example of a full week in the city with Versailles, a Seine cruise and priority entries. For travelers using a wheelchair or with limited mobility, read our guide to [wheelchair accessible Paris](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/articles/wheelchair-accessible-paris).

## Where to stay

The right neighborhood saves you time every day. Our usual picks:

- **Saint-Germain-des-Prés and the 6th:** classic Left Bank, walkable to Orsay, the Louvre and the islands. Our first choice for a first visit.
- **The Marais:** lively, historic, full of small shops and restaurants. Can be noisy on weekend nights.
- **Around the Opéra and Place Vendôme:** central, well connected, with larger hotels and more accessible rooms.
- **The 7th, near the Eiffel Tower:** quieter, elegant, residential. Better for couples than for nightlife.

Avoid booking only by price near the big train stations of the north. The location costs you time and the streets are less pleasant at night.

## Tickets and timing tips

A few things that make a real difference:

- **Book timed tickets** for the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, Versailles and Sainte-Chapelle. The Louvre requires a time slot for everyone.
- **Consider the Paris Museum Pass** if you will visit four or more museums in two to four days. It saves money, though you still need time slots for some sites.
- **Use the metro for distance, walk for pleasure.** Most of central Paris is walkable, and the best discoveries happen between sights.
- **Eat lunch as the main meal.** Set lunch menus in good bistros cost much less than dinner.

To see how Paris fits into a longer trip, our [trip-length planner](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/tools/how-many-days-in-europe) splits your nights between bases, and our guide to [the best time to visit France](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/articles/best-time-to-visit-france) helps you pick the season.

## Our designers' take

When we design Paris and Champagne trips, we almost always push for one more day than travelers plan. Not to add sights, but to leave an afternoon empty. The moments our travelers remember are rarely the Mona Lisa. They are the café where they stayed two hours, the market on a Sunday morning, the walk along the Seine at dusk.

If you only have three days, we would rather you skip Versailles than rush it. Spend the day in the Marais and on the islands, and come back to Versailles on your next trip. And if you have five, take the day trip to Champagne. Forty-five minutes on the TGV and you are in a cellar with a winemaker, which is the best contrast to the city we know.

## Paris as the start of a longer France trip

Paris is the start of most of our France trips. Our [Luxury France Honeymoon](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/packages/luxury-honeymoon-trip-from-paris-to-provence) begins with Paris before Burgundy, the Alps and Provence, and our [10-day France itineraries](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/countries/france/10-days) pair Paris with one or two regions. If Switzerland is next, read [Paris to Switzerland by train](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/articles/paris-to-switzerland-by-train).

## Frequently asked questions

### Is 3 days enough for Paris?

Three days covers the essentials: the Eiffel Tower, Orsay, the Louvre, Notre-Dame and Sainte-Chapelle, plus Versailles. It is a brisk pace, with little time for Montmartre, smaller museums or a day trip. If Paris is your only city, we recommend four full days, plus your arrival and departure days.

### What is the best day trip from Paris?

It depends on your interests. Champagne is about 45 minutes by TGV to Reims, Giverny about 45 minutes by train plus a short shuttle, and the Loire castles about an hour by TGV to Tours. Mont Saint-Michel and the D-Day beaches are too far for a comfortable day trip and deserve an overnight.

### Where should I stay in Paris for a first visit?

Saint-Germain-des-Prés is our first choice: classic Left Bank streets, walking distance to Orsay, the Louvre and the islands. The Marais is livelier, the area around the Opéra is central with larger hotels, and the 7th near the Eiffel Tower is quieter and residential. Avoid choosing only by price near the northern stations.

### Which days are Paris museums closed?

The Louvre closes on Tuesdays, while the Musée d'Orsay and the Palace of Versailles close on Mondays. Many other museums follow one of these two patterns. Plan your big museum days around them, and book timed tickets for the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, Versailles and Sainte-Chapelle in advance.
