For a first trip, plan **ten days**: four in Paris and five or six in one or two regions, such as Provence, the French Riviera, Normandy or the Loire. **Seven days** covers Paris plus one region. **Two weeks** lets you add a third region, or slow down enough to enjoy long lunches, which is half of what France is for. France is larger than most of our travelers expect. Paris to Nice is about five hours forty minutes on the fastest TGV, and the coast-to-Alps trips that look short on a map often are not. So the right number of days depends less on how much you want to see than on how many times you want to change hotels. ## How far everything is from Paris The high-speed network radiates from Paris, which is why most trips start there. Two nights only for a short stop on the way, such as Champagne or Lyon between Paris and Provence. - **One base change every three or four days** at most. It can be done, but you spend a full day in transit and see each place in a rush. A classic shape: - Paris (4 nights), Burgundy or Lyon (2), Provence (4), the Riviera (3), with a flight home from Nice. Sleep near the bay or in Normandy. - **The Riviera and Provence without a car or driver.** The coast works by train, but inland Provence does not. - **Ignoring the season.** Lavender blooms from mid-June to late July, Christmas markets run from late November, and many Loire and Normandy sites shorten their hours in winter. ## Pacing for reduced mobility For travelers who use a wheelchair or walk with difficulty, add one day per region and avoid more than one base change every four days. Paris, Lyon and Nice have flat central areas and step-free trams; the perched villages of Provence and the Riviera, and Mont-Saint-Michel's main street, are steep and cobbled. Seven days is enough for Paris plus one region, such as Normandy, the Loire Valley, Champagne or Provence. It is not enough to see Paris, Provence and the Riviera properly, because the transfers alone take a day. If you have only a week, choose the region that matches your interests and keep four days for Paris. ### How many days do you need in the South of France? Plan at least five or six nights to see both Provence and the French Riviera: three in the Luberon or near Avignon and three in Nice. With only three or four nights, choose one of the two. Provence is about villages, markets and countryside and needs a car or driver; the Riviera is about the sea and works by train. ### Is 10 days in France too long? No. Ten days is the length we recommend for a first trip. It gives you four days in Paris and two regions at three nights each, with a buffer for jet lag, rain or a long lunch. Many of our travelers wish they had taken two weeks once they discover how different each region is. ### Can you see Paris and Nice in one week? Yes, with four nights in Paris and three in Nice, linked by a TGV of about five hours forty minutes or a flight of about an hour and twenty minutes.
