# Geneva to Chamonix: Train, Shuttle or Private Driver

Geneva to Chamonix takes about 1 hour 15 minutes by road and about 2 hours 30 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes by train. For most travelers flying into Geneva, a private transfer or a shared shuttle from the airport is the practical answer; the train is the better choice if you travel light, want to avoid traffic on winter Saturdays, or would like to arrive the scenic way through Switzerland and the Trient valley. We design Chamonix trips from Geneva all year, and this is how we decide.

> **Quick answer**
>
> - **Fastest:** by road from Geneva Airport, about 1 h 15 min for roughly 100 km, by private driver, shared shuttle or bus.
> - **By train:** Léman Express from Genève (Cornavin) toward Saint-Gervais-les-Bains-Le Fayet, then the Mont-Blanc Express to Chamonix: about 2 h 30 min to 2 h 45 min, roughly hourly.
> - **Price in 2026:** shared shuttles about €30 to €40 (about $35 to $46) per person; private transfers from about €150 per vehicle, more for a minivan or a premium car; low-cost buses from around €10 when booked early.
> - **Stations:** Genève (Cornavin), change at Annemasse or La Roche-sur-Foron on many trains, then at Saint-Gervais-les-Bains-Le Fayet; arrive at Chamonix-Mont-Blanc station in the town center.

## Geneva to Chamonix: every option compared

| Option | Time | Price range (2026) | Comfort | Luggage |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Private driver | about 1 h 15 min, airport to door | from about €150 per vehicle; €175 to €290 for sedans and minivans on transfer platforms | The most comfortable after a flight | Skis and big bags fit |
| Shared shuttle | about 1 h 15 min plus drop-offs | about €30 to €40 per person | Minivan with other travelers | One suitcase plus skis is typical |
| Low-cost bus to Chamonix Sud | about 1 h 35 min | from around €10 to €20 | Coach seat | Hold luggage |
| Train via Léman Express and Mont-Blanc Express | about 2 h 30 min to 2 h 45 min, 2 changes | a regional fare, priced on the day | Comfortable, but changes with bags | Racks, carry your own |
| Train via Martigny and Vallorcine | about 3 h 20 min, 2 changes | regional fares; the Swiss Travel Pass covers the Swiss part | The scenic route | As above |
| Rental car | about 1 h 15 min | rental, fuel and French motorway tolls | Flexible | Unlimited |

Our default for a first trip is a private driver from the airport: the train needs two changes, and the road saves well over an hour. On winter Saturdays, when the ski resorts change over and the motorway to the valley can be slow, the train becomes more attractive.

## The fastest train route, step by step

1. **Get to Genève (Cornavin).** From Geneva Airport, trains to Cornavin take about 6 minutes and run several times an hour.
2. **Take the Léman Express.** Depending on the hour, a direct L3 runs to Saint-Gervais-les-Bains-Le Fayet, or you change at Annemasse or La Roche-sur-Foron. This leg takes about 1 h 40 min to 1 h 50 min and climbs into the Arve valley past Cluses and Sallanches.
3. **Change at Saint-Gervais-les-Bains-Le Fayet.** The Mont-Blanc Express, a narrow-gauge regional train, leaves from the same station toward Chamonix and Vallorcine.
4. **Ride up to Chamonix.** About 45 minutes via Servoz and Les Houches, climbing steadily into the valley.
5. **Arrive at Chamonix-Mont-Blanc station,** a few minutes' walk from the town center and the Aiguille du Midi cable car.

## The scenic train route via Martigny

This is the one we recommend to train lovers. Take the InterRegio from Geneva to Martigny along Lake Geneva and the Rhône valley (about 1 h 40 min), then the Mont-Blanc Express over the Swiss side: it climbs out of the Rhône valley on a steep rack section, crosses the Trient gorge, and reaches the French border at Le Châtelard. Change at Vallorcine for Chamonix. The whole trip takes about 3 h 20 min. The Swiss Travel Pass covers the journey as far as the border; you need a ticket for the short French section.

## Where to sit

- **Léman Express:** the best views come after La Roche-sur-Foron, when the Arve valley narrows. Mont Blanc appears ahead on clear days.
- **Mont-Blanc Express from Le Fayet:** sit on the **right-hand side** in the direction of travel, facing the Mont Blanc massif as the train climbs toward Les Houches and Chamonix.
- **Martigny to Vallorcine:** window seats on both sides; the drop into the Trient gorge is the highlight.

## Tickets, passes and the Chamonix guest card

- **Where to book:** the SBB app or sbb.ch and SNCF Connect both sell through tickets. These are regional trains: there is no seat reservation, and fares do not climb as the train fills, so you can buy on the day.
- **Swiss Travel Pass:** useful mainly on the scenic route, where it covers Geneva to Martigny and the Mont-Blanc Express as far as Le Châtelard. On the Léman Express route, most of the journey is in France, so buy a through ticket.
- **Chamonix guest card:** if you stay in the valley, your hotel issues a guest card that lets you ride the valley trains between Servoz and Vallorcine, and the local buses, without paying. It makes Chamonix very easy to explore without a car.

## Stops worth making on the way

- **Annecy:** not on the train line, but with a driver, a stop at the lake and the old town adds about an hour to the transfer. Our [Chamonix week](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/packages/pure-air-in-chamonix) includes a day there.
- **Saint-Gervais-les-Bains:** the thermal baths, Les Bains du Mont-Blanc, are a good half day on a rest day.
- **Martigny:** on the scenic route, the Fondation Pierre Gianadda art museum is a short walk from the station.

## Accessibility between Geneva and Chamonix

Geneva Airport and Cornavin have step-free access to all platforms, and Léman Express trains have low-floor entrances. Book help through the SBB Contact Center Handicap on the Swiss side (at least one hour ahead, +41 800 007 102 from abroad) and through SNCF assistance on the French side. The smaller stations on the Mont-Blanc Express are not always staffed, and boarding heights vary, so for wheelchair users we use a private adapted vehicle for the whole transfer. It is faster too, at about 1 h 15 min door to door.

## How we handle this transfer on a private trip

When Chamonix is part of a trip we design, a driver meets you in the arrivals hall at Geneva Airport and takes you straight to your hotel, with a stop at Annecy if you like. Skis, boots and child seats are arranged in advance. Once you are in the valley, the guest card and the trains cover most excursions, so we rarely book a car for the week. For the reverse direction, we time the drive back to Geneva with a buffer for border and airport traffic on weekends.

Chamonix pairs well with Switzerland: Zermatt is about four hours away via Martigny, and our [Geneva to Zermatt guide](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/articles/geneva-to-zermatt) covers that leg. ## Frequently asked questions

### What is the best way to get from Geneva to Chamonix?

For most travelers, a private driver or a shared shuttle from Geneva Airport: about 1 hour 15 minutes, with no changes and room for skis. The train takes about two and a half hours with two changes but avoids weekend ski traffic. The scenic train via Martigny takes over three hours and is a trip in itself.

### Is there a direct train from Geneva to Chamonix?

No. You take the Léman Express toward Saint-Gervais-les-Bains-Le Fayet, sometimes changing at Annemasse or La Roche-sur-Foron, then the Mont-Blanc Express up to Chamonix. The alternative goes via Martigny in Switzerland and Vallorcine. Both need at least two changes, so travelers with heavy luggage or skis usually prefer the road.

### How much does a transfer from Geneva Airport to Chamonix cost?

In 2026 shared shuttles cost about €30 to €40 per person, and private transfers start around €150 per vehicle, rising to roughly €175 to €290 for sedans and minivans on booking platforms, and more for premium cars. Low-cost buses can be under €20 if booked early. Prices rise on winter Saturdays.

### Is the Swiss Travel Pass valid to Chamonix?

Only on the Swiss part of the journey. It is most useful on the scenic route via Martigny, where it covers the trip from Geneva to the border at Le Châtelard; you then need a ticket for the short French section into Chamonix. Once you stay in the valley, the Chamonix guest card covers the local trains.
