September is when France comes back from vacation, and it is the month we recommend most often. The French call it "la rentrée": schools reopen in the first days of the month, the beaches empty, and the country goes back to work in a good mood. For travelers that means a sea still warm from summer, afternoons in the 70s °F in most regions, and the grape harvest under way in the vineyards.

September has two things to plan for: harvest timing, which is moving earlier every decade, and the first autumn storms on the Mediterranean.

## La rentrée: a different country after the first week

The change is visible almost overnight. On the Riviera and in Provence, families leave and couples and retirees arrive; beach clubs and restaurants stay open and are easier to book. Paris, on the other hand, fills up again: the residents come home, the cultural season starts, and the fashion and trade-fair calendar returns, with the women's fashion week usually in the last days of September and early October.

In practice, we send travelers south and to the vineyards in September, and keep Paris for the start or end of the trip.

## The harvest: where and when to see it

Harvest dates depend on each year's weather and are set only a few weeks ahead. They have been getting earlier: in 2026 the Burgundy wine board announced picking "from August 8", an exceptionally early start, running to mid-September.

| Region | Usual harvest window | What we plan |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Champagne | Late August to mid-September; dates set village by village | Visits to houses and growers, harvest lunches when invited |
| Burgundy and Beaujolais | Late August to mid-September | Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits cellars, villages full of pickers |
| Bordeaux | Whites from late August, reds through September into October | Saint-Émilion and the Médoc, estates with crush-pad visits |
| Cognac | Mid-September to October | Vineyards, then the distilleries in winter |

These windows are our general guide. The estates confirm their dates in August, and we adjust the itinerary then.

Two things to know. First, harvest is a busy time for small estates, and some close their doors to visitors for two or three weeks; the larger houses and those with dedicated visitor teams stay open. Second, being in a wine village during the harvest is the experience: tractors in the streets, crates of grapes, and the smell of fermenting must from the cellars. Our [Burgundy wine tour from Lyon](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/articles/burgundy-wine-tour-from-lyon) explains how we arrange visits that week.

## The Riviera's second summer

September on the Riviera has the warmest water of the year after August, around 72°F (22°C) at Nice by satellite estimates, with afternoons at 77°F (24.8°C). Days are still about 12 and a half hours long in mid-September. The Monaco Yacht Show runs from **September 22 to 25, 2027**, and the Régates Royales, a regatta of classic sailing yachts, fill Cannes harbor in the last full week of the month.

## Storm season in the South

The averages show something the brochures leave out. September is when rainfall jumps on the Mediterranean side: Carpentras in Provence gets about 99 mm of rain in September against 41 mm in August, Nice about 81 mm against 17. It falls on only five or six days, often as violent thunderstorms, the "épisodes méditerranéens". A storm can close roads in the Cévennes or the hinterland of Nice for a day. We keep a flexible day in southern itineraries and watch Météo-France's vigilance maps with our travelers.

## Heritage Days and other September dates

- **Braderie de Lille, September 4-5, 2027:** a giant street flea market that takes over Lille for a weekend.
- **European Heritage Days:** on the third weekend of September (September 19-20 in 2026; by that rule September 18-19 in 2027), ministries, the Élysée Palace, the Senate and private châteaux open their doors, many free. Lines for the most famous buildings are long; we pick less-known addresses.
- **Mont-Saint-Michel:** the autumn equinox brings big tides. In 2026 the tide table showed the Mont becoming a full island on September 12. The abbey switches to its autumn hours (9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.) on September 1.
- **Versailles:** the Saturday night illuminated gardens and fireworks ran until September 19 in 2026.

## Temperatures and rainfall by region

Météo-France 1991-2020 normals (Chamonix: 1981-2010):

| Region (station) | High | Low | Rain |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Paris | 71°F (21.5°C) | 55°F (13.0°C) | 45 mm |
| Normandy (Caen) | 69°F (20.4°C) | 52°F (11.1°C) | 54 mm |
| Loire Valley (Tours) | 72°F (22.1°C) | 53°F (11.4°C) | 52 mm |
| Alsace (Strasbourg) | 71°F (21.6°C) | 51°F (10.7°C) | 55 mm |
| Burgundy (Dijon) | 71°F (21.7°C) | 52°F (11.0°C) | 56 mm |
| Lyon | 74°F (23.1°C) | 55°F (12.8°C) | 83 mm |
| Alps (Chamonix) | 66°F (19.1°C) | 43°F (6.0°C) | 104 mm |
| Provence (Carpentras) | 80°F (26.4°C) | 55°F (12.7°C) | 99 mm |
| Riviera (Nice) | 77°F (24.8°C) | 64°F (17.7°C) | 81 mm |
| Bordeaux | 76°F (24.2°C) | 56°F (13.3°C) | 81 mm |
| Dordogne (Bergerac) | 76°F (24.4°C) | 51°F (10.8°C) | 66 mm |

In the Alps, September is clear and quiet, though some lifts and mountain huts close after mid-month. Check each cable car's dates before planning a high-altitude day late in the month.

## Rates fall after the first week

September is shoulder season on the coast and in the countryside: hotel rates fall from their August peak, and minimum-stay rules disappear after the first week. Paris is the exception, with full hotels during fashion week and big trade fairs. Wine regions are busy on harvest weekends, and the best Saint-Émilion and Beaune hotels book early.

## Packing for vineyards and late-summer beaches

- Summer clothes for the South, with a light sweater for evenings.
- A rain jacket: the storms are short but heavy.
- Closed shoes for vineyard visits, where the ground can be muddy after rain.
- Swimwear: September is still a swimming month on the Riviera and in Corsica.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is September a good time to visit France?

It is our most recommended month. The sea is still warm on the Riviera, afternoons are in the 70s °F in most regions, French families are back at work and the grape harvest is under way. Paris is busy again with its cultural season, while the coast and countryside are calmer and cheaper than in August.

### When is the grape harvest in France?

It depends on the region and the year, and it is getting earlier. Champagne and Burgundy usually pick from late August to mid-September; in 2026 Burgundy started on August 8. Bordeaux picks white grapes from late August and red grapes through September, sometimes into October. Exact dates are set a few weeks ahead.

### Is the water warm in the South of France in September?

Yes. The sea at Nice is around 72°F (22°C) in September by satellite estimates, nearly as warm as in August. Air temperatures average 77°F (25°C) in the afternoon, and beach clubs stay open. Watch for the occasional heavy storm, which can make the sea rough for a day or two.

### Does it rain a lot in France in September?

In the north, no: Paris gets about 45 mm over seven or eight days. In the South it is different. Provence and the Riviera receive more rain in September than in summer, falling on only five or six days, often as short, violent thunderstorms. We keep a flexible day in southern itineraries.
