In mid-June the sun sets in Paris just before 10 p.m., and it is still light enough to walk along the Seine at 10:30. Add the first lavender in Provence, a sea that finally warms up on the Riviera, and a calendar that runs from the D-Day anniversary to the Fête de la Musique, and June is the month France lives outdoors. It is also the last month before French families go on vacation: schools only break up on July 3, 2027. Prices climb through the month, but the crowds of July and August are still a few weeks away. ## Sixteen hours of daylight Mid-June sunrise and sunset, from the US Naval Observatory: - **Paris:** about 5:47 a.m. to 9:56 p.m., just over 16 hours of daylight. - **Nice:** about 5:49 a.m. to 9:14 p.m., about 15 and a half hours. How we use it: sightseeing in the morning, a long lunch and a rest in the heat of the afternoon in the South, then a second outing at 6 p.m., when the light is golden and the day-trippers have gone. Mont-Saint-Michel, the Loire châteaux and the Provence hill villages are all at their best in that evening window. The Mont-Saint-Michel abbey stays open until 7 p.m. from May to August. ## The June 2027 calendar In date order: - **June 4-6: Monaco Grand Prix,** the first with a sprint race. The Riviera's most expensive weekend of the year. - **Around June 4-6: Rendez-vous aux jardins.** Private and public gardens across France open for a weekend, usually the first in June (June 5-7 in 2026; the 2027 dates were not yet confirmed). - **June 5-6: Roland-Garros finals** in Paris; the tournament runs from May 17. - **Sunday, June 6: the 83rd anniversary of D-Day.** The D-Day Festival Normandy runs from May 29 to June 13, 2027, with ceremonies at the landing beaches and the American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer. Hotels near Bayeux book up very early for that week. - **Early June: Nuit Blanche** in Paris, the all-night contemporary art event, now held in June (June 6 in 2026). - **June 9-13: 24 Hours of Le Mans** race week, with the race itself on the weekend. - **June 14-20: Paris Air Show** at Le Bourget, held in odd years only. The last days are usually open to the public. - **Monday, June 21: Fête de la Musique.** Free concerts in every street, square and bar in France, from late afternoon into the night. In Paris, the Marais, the Latin Quarter and the canal Saint-Martin are the liveliest. - **Wednesday, June 23: summer sales** start under the national rule (dates can change by decree, as they did in 2026). - **Saturday nights from June: Les Grandes Eaux Nocturnes** at Versailles, with illuminated gardens and fireworks (June 6 to September 19 in 2026). ## Lavender: the first weeks June is the start of lavender season, not the peak. The Provence tourism board gives mid-June to mid-July for the Valensole plateau, with the exact start varying between about June 15 and July 15 depending on the spring. In 2026 the bloom had started by June 10 and harvesting began on June 29. The higher plateau around Sault blooms later. Our guide to [when to see lavender in Provence](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/articles/lavender-in-provence) goes field by field. ## Hot, warm or mild: June by region From Météo-France 1991-2020 normals (Chamonix: 1981-2010): **Hot.** Inland Provence reaches 84°F (29°C) in the afternoon at Carpentras and Avignon, with only 4 to 5 rainy days. Lyon averages 78°F (25.6°C). **Warm.** Paris averages 74°F (23.4°C) by day and 58°F (14.2°C) at night, with about 204 hours of sunshine. Tours, Strasbourg and Bordeaux sit between 74 and 77°F. Nice averages 76°F (24.7°C), with warm nights around 65°F (18°C). **Mild.** Normandy stays fresher, about 69°F (20.5°C) in Caen, and the Alps are in the low 70s °F by day in Chamonix but still near 46°F (7.5°C) at night. Heat waves have become more frequent in late June. We choose hotels with air conditioning in Paris, Lyon and Provence, which is not standard in older French buildings. The sea at Nice warms to around 72°F (22°C) by late June by satellite estimates: the start of real swimming season. ## The mountains open for summer June is when the Alps switch from winter to summer. The high road passes reopen (the Col de l'Iseran from early June, the Galibier usually from late May or early June), mountain refuges open, and the boats on Lake Annecy run their full summer schedule. Snow lingers on the highest trails into early July, so we keep June hikes to mid-altitude routes and use cable cars such as the Aiguille du Midi for the high views. ## Before the French holidays: June crowds - **Paris** is busy all month, with Roland-Garros, the Air Show and tour groups. You get the longest days of the year, warm but rarely extreme weather in the north, a swimmable sea on the Riviera by the end of the month and the first lavender in Provence. French schools stay in session until early July, so crowds are lighter than in July and August. ### Will the lavender be blooming in June? Usually from mid-June, although it varies with the spring. In Paris, the Marais and the canal Saint-Martin are among the liveliest areas. Expect crowded metros late in the evening. ### How hot is France in June? Météo-France normals give afternoon averages of 74°F (23°C) in Paris, 76°F (25°C) in Nice and 84°F (29°C) inland in Provence. Heat waves have become more frequent, though, and can push temperatures into the 90s °F.
