August is the month the French go on vacation, and it changes the country in two opposite ways. Paris and the big cities empty of their residents: traffic eases, some neighborhood restaurants and bakeries close for two to four weeks, and the museums stay open. The coasts, Provence and the mountains fill to capacity, with the peak around August 15. Weather is hot and mostly dry: about 78°F (25.6°C) in Paris and 82°F (28°C) in Nice in the afternoon.

Knowing which France you will be in makes all the difference. Here is how we plan August from our office in Villefranche-sur-Saône.

## The French August, explained

Most French workers take two to four weeks off in summer, and a large share choose August. School is out from July 3 until early September, and August 15, the Assumption, is a public holiday (a Sunday in 2027). The consequences for travelers:

- **Traffic:** the first weekend of August, when July and August vacationers swap places, and the weekend around August 15 are traditionally the worst of the year on the motorways to the South and the Alps.
- **Trains:** TGVs to the Riviera, Provence, the Atlantic coast and the Alps sell out early, so we book them as soon as sales open.
- **Coastal hotels:** many require a minimum stay of several nights and do not take one-night bookings at all.

## Paris in August: what closes, what gets better

August is the best month to see Paris without Parisians. The metro is calmer, crossing the city by car is noticeably faster, and hotel rates often ease after the fashion and convention seasons.

The trade-off is closures. Many independent restaurants, bakeries, wine bars and small shops close for part of August, usually with a note on the door. The big museums, department stores and the Eiffel Tower stay open, and hotel restaurants and tourist-area brasseries keep running. We check every restaurant we book for August closing dates, and keep a list of reliable places that stay open.

Paris also turns to the river. Paris Plages ran on the Seine banks until August 30 in 2026, and the supervised swimming spots in the Seine stay open into late August when water quality allows (the 2026 season ended on August 29).

For travelers with limited mobility, the heat matters more than the crowds in August. Our [wheelchair accessible Paris guide](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/articles/wheelchair-accessible-paris) lists step-free routes, and our [accessible Paris trip](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/packages/7-days-in-paris-accessible-trip) can be paced around the hottest hours of the day.

## The coast and Provence at full capacity

The Riviera, the Atlantic beaches and the Provence villages are at their busiest. Expect queues for parking in Gordes and Saint-Tropez, booked-out beach clubs and full restaurants. A few points we build in:

- **Book beach clubs and boat days in advance**, and go out early: by 11 a.m. the best spots are taken.
- **Lavender is mostly over** on the Valensole plateau by August, but the higher fields around Sault last longer, and Sault's lavender festival is held on August 15 every year.
- **Grasse** celebrates its jasmine festival on the first weekend of August (July 31 to August 2 in 2026), with a flower parade through the town.
- **Brittany** hosts the Festival Interceltique de Lorient from **July 30 to August 8, 2027**, one of the largest Celtic festivals in Europe.

Nice averages only two rainy days in August, and the sea is at its warmest of the year, around 75°F (24°C) by satellite estimates.

## The harvest is starting earlier

Wine lovers should know that August is no longer too early for the harvest. In 2026 the Burgundy wine board reported picking starting "exceptionally early", from August 8, and running to mid-September. Champagne publishes its picking dates village by village in mid-August. Bordeaux whites are usually picked from late August. If seeing the harvest matters to you, late August and early September are now the safest window. We confirm with the estates a few weeks ahead, when they know their dates.

## The Alps: August's best bet

When the plains bake, we send travelers up. August is the warmest month in the Alps but still pleasant: Chamonix averages 74°F (23°C) by day and 48°F (9°C) at night (1981-2010 normals). All cable cars, mountain trains and high passes are open, the Mer de Glace and Montenvers train run, and lakes such as Annecy are warm enough for swimming. Afternoon thunderstorms are common: Chamonix averages 12 days of rain in August, so we schedule high-altitude excursions in the morning.

## How hot is France in August?

Météo-France 1991-2020 normals, average afternoon highs and night lows:

- **Paris:** 78°F (25.6°C) and 61°F (16°C). Sunset around 9:05 p.m. in mid-August.
- **Normandy (Caen):** 74°F (23.2°C) and 56°F (13.3°C), the coolest of our regions.
- **Loire Valley (Tours), Alsace (Strasbourg), Burgundy (Dijon):** all around 79°F (26°C) by day and 58°F (14.5°C) at night.
- **Lyon:** 82°F (28°C) and 62°F (16.6°C).
- **Provence (Carpentras):** 89°F (31.9°C) and 61°F (16.1°C), with about 327 hours of sunshine.
- **Riviera (Nice):** 82°F (27.9°C) and 70°F (21.1°C). Nights stay warm.
- **Bordeaux and the Dordogne (Bergerac):** 82°F (27.6-27.9°C) by day, 58 to 61°F at night.

Heat waves can push afternoons well above these averages for several days at a time.

## Prices and what to pack

August is the most expensive month on the coast and in the mountains, and among the more reasonable in Paris. Light clothes, a sun hat, sunscreen, a swimsuit and a light layer for the mountains and air-conditioned trains cover almost everything. Bring a scarf or light layer to cover shoulders in churches.

## August trips that avoid the crush

**A family week in Chamonix.** Rafting, the Aiguille du Midi, the Montenvers train and a day on Lake Annecy, on our [Chamonix adventure week](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/packages/pure-air-in-chamonix). Our guide to [Geneva to Chamonix](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/articles/geneva-to-chamonix) covers the transfer.

**Paris, Normandy and the Loire.** Normandy's mild climate makes our [France family trip](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/packages/a-trip-for-the-whole-family-history-of-france-and-disney) a good August choice, with Paris quieter than usual.

**Paris on its own terms.** Six or seven nights in Paris, with day trips to Versailles and Giverny, for travelers who want the city with its summer calm.

If you can move your dates, our [best time to visit France](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/articles/best-time-to-visit-france) guide compares August with the shoulder seasons, and [France in September](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/articles/france-in-september) shows what changes once the French go back to work.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is August a bad time to visit France?

Not bad, but you need to choose where. The coasts, Provence and the mountains are at their busiest and most expensive, especially around August 15. Paris, by contrast, is calmer than usual: some small restaurants close, but the museums and sights stay open and hotel rates can ease.

### Is everything closed in Paris in August?

No. The Louvre, Orsay, Versailles, the Eiffel Tower, department stores and most hotels and brasseries stay open. What closes are many independent restaurants, bakeries and small shops, usually for two to four weeks. We check closing dates for every restaurant we book and keep a list of good places that stay open.

### What is August 15 in France?

August 15 is the Assumption, a national public holiday; in 2027 it falls on a Sunday. It marks the peak of the French summer vacation, with full beaches, busy motorways and village festivals across the country, including Sault's lavender festival in Provence. Banks and many shops close for the day.

### Where is cooler in France in August?

Normandy and Brittany, where Caen averages 74°F (23°C) by day, and the Alps, where Chamonix averages 74°F by day and 48°F at night. Both offer a real break from the heat of Provence and the Rhône valley, where afternoons average close to 90°F (32°C).
