# Christmas Markets by River Cruise or by Train: An Honest Comparison

Christmas market river cruise vs train: evening markets, docks, water levels, hotels, cost and accessibility compared, with 2026 dates and train routes.

Choose a river cruise for Christmas markets if you want to unpack once, have most meals included and are happy to see each market for a few hours, often in daylight. Choose a train trip if you want to stay in the old towns, walk back to the markets after dinner when the lights are on, and include the great markets that no ship reaches, such as Colmar, Munich or Dresden. At a comparable level of comfort, the two cost a similar amount; what differs is how your days feel.

We design Christmas market trips by train every winter, and many of our travelers have taken a river cruise before. This comparison is what we tell them when they ask which to choose.

## River cruise vs train at a glance

|  | River cruise | Train trip |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Unpacking** | Once | Every 2-3 nights (luggage can be handled for you) |
| **Markets** | Those near the river, on the ship's schedule | Any city on the rail network, on your schedule |
| **Evening markets** | Depends on the itinerary; the ship often sails in the evening or at night | Every evening, a short walk from the hotel |
| **Where you sleep** | A compact cabin, docked at the edge of town or in a commercial port | A hotel in the old town |
| **Meals** | Most included, at set times on board | Your choice of restaurants (some included) |
| **Pace** | Set by the ship and the group excursions | Set by you |
| **Weather risk** | High or low water can change the itinerary | Snow can delay trains, rarely cancels a trip |
| **Fellow travelers** | Often well over 100 passengers per ship | Just your party |
| **Flexibility** | Fixed route and dates | Any start date, any length |

## How a Christmas market river cruise works

Most Christmas market cruises sail one of three routes over about a week:

- **The Rhine**, between Basel and Amsterdam, with calls typically including Strasbourg, Breisach (for Colmar and the Black Forest), Speyer or Mannheim (for Heidelberg), Rüdesheim, Koblenz and Cologne.
- **The Danube**, between Nuremberg or Passau and Budapest, through Regensburg, Vienna and Bratislava.
- **The Main**, between Frankfurt and Nuremberg, with Würzburg and Bamberg.

The appeal is real. You unpack once, the ship moves while you sleep or dine, and the market visits are organized for you. For travelers who dislike changing hotels, it is the main argument.

**What the brochures do not stress:**

- **Docks are often outside the center.** For Colmar, Rhine ships usually stop at Breisach on the German bank and continue by coach. Strasbourg, Nuremberg and others are often reached by a transfer from the port.
- **Market time is limited.** A port call may give you an afternoon, and on some evenings the ship is already sailing when the markets are lit, which is when they look best.
- **The water decides.** In autumn and winter, low water or high water on the Rhine and Danube can force a change of route, a bus replacement for part of the journey or a swap between ships.
- **You visit with the ship.** When a large ship's passengers leave at the same time for the same market, the first hour is crowded.

## How a Christmas market trip by train works

On a train trip, you stay two or three nights in each city, in a hotel in the old town, and move between cities on fast trains in first class. You visit the markets at the quietest hours and go back after dinner when they are lit. You also reach great markets that Christmas cruises rarely or never include, such as Munich, Rothenburg and the Swiss markets, and you sleep in Colmar rather than visiting it by coach.

**Train-friendly market routes we design:**

- **Germany:** Munich, Nuremberg, Dresden and Berlin, with Salzburg and Rothenburg ob der Tauber as day trips. Munich to Nuremberg is about 1 hour 10 minutes by ICE.
- **France:** Strasbourg (November 27 to December 24, 2026) and Colmar (November 23 to December 29, 2026), about 30 minutes apart by regional train, with a driver for the wine villages. See our guide to the [Alsace Christmas markets](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/articles/alsace-christmas-markets).
- **Switzerland:** Basel (November 26 to December 23, 2026), Zurich, Lucerne and Montreux, each about an hour apart.

Nuremberg's Christkindlesmarkt traditionally opens on the Friday before the first Sunday of Advent, which would be November 27 in 2026; check the official date before booking. Our guide to [the best Christmas markets in Europe](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/articles/most-beautiful-christmas-markets-in-germany-and-france) has the dates we have confirmed for each city.

**What makes a train trip work:**

- **Hotels next to the markets.** We choose them so you can walk back in the evening.
- **Weekdays for the big cities.** Munich and Nuremberg are busiest on weekends, so we schedule them midweek.
- **Luggage handled.** On rail trips, we arrange transfers between the hotel and the station, or luggage services where they exist.
- **Fewer, longer stops.** Two or three nights per city, never one.

## Cost: compare like with like

A cruise fare usually includes the cabin, most meals and some excursions. A train trip with us includes hotels with breakfast, first-class trains, guided visits and some meals, and leaves you free to choose most restaurants. To compare, add to the cruise fare your flights, drinks, gratuities and optional excursions if they are not included; add to the train trip the meals you will pay for locally.

Our train-based Christmas trips, per person in 2026:

| Trip | Length | From |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Germany Christmas Markets by Train](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/packages/germany-10-day-magical-christmas-markets-by-train): Munich, Salzburg, Rothenburg, Nuremberg, Dresden, Berlin | 9 days | EUR 2,299 (about $2,670) |
| [French Christmas](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/packages/the-magic-of-french-christmas): Colmar and the Alsace villages, Lyon, Val d'Isère | 7 days | EUR 2,099 (about $2,440) |
| [Belgium, Alsace and Switzerland by Train](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/packages/belgium-france-and-switzerland): Brussels, Strasbourg, Colmar, Basel, Zermatt | 10 days | EUR 2,999 (about $3,480) |

## Accessibility and limited mobility

Neither option is automatically easier. On a ship, ask whether there is a lift between decks, how steep the gangway can be, and whether the ship moors alongside others, which means crossing another vessel to reach the shore. Shore excursions are often walking tours on cobbles. By train, assistance at stations is free in the EU if requested at least 24 hours ahead, and in Switzerland at least an hour ahead, and newer trains have level boarding. Strasbourg lends wheelchairs free at its market information chalet on Place Kléber. Our guide to [Europe with limited mobility](https://www.mobeeinternational.com/articles/europe-with-limited-mobility) compares group tours, cruises and private trips in detail.

## Which one is right for you

**Choose a river cruise if:**

-   you want to unpack once and have meals organized;
-   you enjoy the social side of a ship;
-   you are happy with daytime market visits and a fixed itinerary;
- the cities on the river are the ones you want to see.

**Choose a train trip if:**

-   you want to see the markets lit up at night, more than once;
-   you want to stay in the old towns rather than at a dock;
-   Colmar, Munich, Dresden, Rothenburg or the Swiss markets are on your list;
- you want to set your own pace and dates.

**A middle way:** some travelers combine both, with a few nights in Basel, Strasbourg or Colmar by train before or after a Rhine cruise. We design the land part and the trains, and you book the cruise directly.

## When to book

Hotels in Nuremberg, Strasbourg and Colmar fill early for December weekends, and the most popular cruise departures sell out too. We book Christmas train trips from the spring and recommend confirming by September at the latest. The first two weeks of December are the calmest; the weekends before Christmas are the busiest.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is a Christmas market river cruise worth it?

It is worth it if you value unpacking once and having meals and excursions organized, and if the river cities are the ones you want. The trade-offs are short market visits, often in daylight, docks outside the center, and itineraries that can change with water levels. Travelers who want the markets lit at night usually prefer a train trip.

### Can you see the Christmas markets at night on a river cruise?

Sometimes. It depends on the itinerary: some port calls include an evening in town, but ships often sail in the evening or overnight to reach the next city. If evening markets matter to you, check each port call's arrival and departure times before booking, or choose a train trip with hotels in the old towns.

### Which Christmas markets can you reach by train but not by river cruise?

Munich, Rothenburg ob der Tauber and most Swiss markets, such as Zurich, Lucerne and Montreux, are not regular stops on Christmas river cruises, and Dresden is rarely included. Rhine ships usually reach Colmar by coach from Breisach. By train, all of these are a few hours apart at most, with hotels in the center.

### Is a river cruise or a train trip cheaper for Christmas markets?

At a comparable level of comfort, the cost is similar. A cruise fare includes the cabin and most meals; a train trip includes central hotels with breakfast, first-class trains and guided visits, and you pay for most meals locally. Our Christmas train trips start from EUR 2,099 (about $2,440) per person for seven days in 2026.
